She has her first group assignment and I knew she was going to make corrections, and polish it up today(they have off here).I looked at it today, the thing needs a massive overhaul.  Her and the group knew it and I guess the other two decided she was the best one to do it. It was an optional group or individual assignment, next time I will make sure she does it by herself so she is not helping to bring others' grades up.  4951

"The other two decided......"Yeah, NO. Tell her to get them back over there to do the work needed.  If you have to, tell the other two to get back over there and do their part of this GROUP project or the teacher will be notified along with their parents.This isn't so much about this project. It's about enforcing the terms of the project and teaching your kid she isn't their work horse. She isn't.  She needs to learn appropriate boldness now. It will only get worse if you don't. It will effect every area of her life and not in a good way. The truth is it's much easier to build self esteem as you go, incrementally, than be staring at a 30 YO who has none and now you gotta start from scratch. You gotta undo all the harm, all the pain itself and then build healthy attitudes. 4951

Both of my boys really dislike group work. Mostly because the oldest is insane about his grades. All A's, all the time. A low A makes him nervous.

@Fallon: She is still young, but is the only one making an A in the class.  I know they figured she would do all work they didn't.  She has until Friday to complete it, so we shall see.

I have one of each. My oldest gets stuck doing most the work in group projects because she wants an A. I tell her one day her efforts will pay off and those slackers won't know what to do when they are forced to do the work on their own. My younger child, though, seriously doesn't care. At all. So she will do just enough to skate by and if someone else is willing to do all the work she is all over that. It drives me nuts, and I figured eventually someone would call her out and embarrass her about her lack of participation, but so far there has always been that A-earner willing to step up. I'm working on her though, I ask her how she feels when she puts in all her effort at her volleyball game and the entire back-row has decided to goof off - that's exactly how the people in the group project feel. I hope to get through to her some day! 4951

As they get older and get to high school individual, isn't an option.  And there is always a slacker kid.  I made sure my boys know to get contact numbers day one.  And give people a deadline, way ahead of when things are due.  This takes the pressure off the kids that pull their weight.

@Fallon:

Contact info ahead of time is a good idea.

I don't necessarily agree of individual work not being an option with age. As I got older, and tired of being screwed I asked and typically was allowed to do projects alone in both HS and college that were originally assigned otherwise.

I liked being responsible for me instead of a bunch of bums that wanted to take credit for work that wasn't theirs.
