Hello -
I am desperately searching for someone to come and look at our fireplace. It has some serious water damage and I just can't take it anymore. Does anyone know a good fireplace repair person ?? It needs a miracle (( lol - sort of )).

Thanks in advance !! 4951

@mommy2monkies:

I don't know of one but be careful as to who you hire. Fireplaces have tons of code stipulations to ensure they will operate safely.

Good luck in your search. 4951

Thank you both -
Our concern is the fact that we know we have problems and we are very leery about who to have help. It's not that we don't trust people, it's that there's more than one issue. My husband thinks we need a masonry person to restore or fix the brick .... I thought we would start with someone who specializes in fireplaces. I have a contractor at my house now - but he isn't doing the fireplace. I really appreciate the help bc I know this will be a big project that I fear will be expensive. Emoticon

A chimney sweep would be the place to start. Is yours a real fire place, gas, or both?Before the brick to be redone, the structure and roof need to be addressed. 4951

It's brick all the way up - gas line - the good thing is the chimney is not attached to the house all the way up - just the first floor. I'm really getting a fireplace education here lol !! 4951

We talked to that fireplace shop on 1960 and they recommended someone to look at ours.
Someone they knew, who knew what they were doing. That was about 12 years ago for us however. 4951

The #1 fireplace repair company in the Houston area is Chimney Pro (www.texaschimneypro.com).   Master Services (https://mastersservices.com)also come highly recommended. Both companies seem to have good reviews...  Might be a good place to start... At least you can call and talk to them and get an idea of what is going on. 4951

I had my chimney completely redone about 3 years ago. Mine was also leaking. The mortar between the bricks was worn by water and crumbling everywhere. It also needed a new cap on top.Mine is also a gas fireplace that goes all the way to the ground and is not attached to the roof. What I had done is called repointing. Basically what they do is grind out the top layer of the old mortar and apply new mortar. The end result is amazing, it looks like the brick was just laid yesterday. they also installed a new cap on mine. The whole job cost me about $850 dollars and took 3 guys about a day and a half. I didn't need any permits to have this done, and it turned out great, No more leaks!!I have a one story house so my chimney is about 15 ft tall.I found the contractor on Angie's list, its been a couple years so I don't remember their name, but I can look through my files later to see if I can find it.oh, and edited to add, the guys who did the work were not actually a fireplace repair company, but a general masonry/bricklaying company. 4951

I have someone at my house right now for the same issue.  This is the third guy I've had come out to work on this problem.  PM me if you want me to give you a name of who NOT to use.  One of the guys came out, assessed the situation by getting on the roof, spraying water on the chimney making more watermarks on the ceiling THEN he told us he doesn't have scaffolding to fix the problem and gave us a bill for $200.  We should have given him a bill for wasting our time and creating more of a problem for us to fix! 4951

Wow that sucks !

Well I talked to the contractor we have here and they are going to give me a quote for a fix. This guy came highly suggested from a family friend so .... Fingers crossed they can do the work at a good rate. The amount of water damage we are having to fix on the house is ridiculous. They are currently replacing siding and our breakfast room wall due to water damage. Gotta love soggy Houston !! 4951

@monyhoney: Call me first next time. Even if I can't fix it, I can point you in the right direction. For free. Or for blueberry-filled donuts.
