I get notices anytime our credit cards are used.  A few days ago, I got a $1 online charge from Home Depot that put me on alert.  It looked like someone was testing my CC.  Yesterday evening, I got a charge of over $300 for an online purchase from some petfood supplier.  Talked to the fraud division this morning and will get new cards tomorrow.  Whoever hacked it also changed a security question about my mother's maiden name.  Time to change my password as well.It pays to keep a close eye on your CC account! 4951

Change your email passwords as well, 9 times out of 10 this is how they obtain the credit card account info in the first place.Once you have someones email address credentials it becomes very easy to access all of their other online accounts, most everything ties back to your email for password resets and the like. 4951

I get a notice only if it goes over a certain amount. Apparently, I need to change that so I can maybe get an early warning like you did. Did you lose a credit card?  I'm trying to find out how they changed your security question. That's scary. 4951

I wish I knew the answer to that.  It happened to both my Sam's, Macy's and two other cards at the same time.  People do hack but it is still a mystery how the security questions got changed...

PS I hate that debit can be run as credit kind of defeats the purpose of having a debit with a pin. 4951

@Andreweggplant: They own your email. Once they own your email, they own your facebook, When they have those 2 things they have all the information they need to hack almost all of your accounts.

Super strange that they changed the security question. Guess they had big plans for your card. Glad you were able to catch it quickly. 4951

@notfromhere: Just curious, how does a card chip work for online purchases?

@cooped: It doesn't. They use the CVV/CVC codes on the back instead.

@ZMAN and @KevinJ:  I haven't lost any cards.  My CC does have a chip, but these were both on-line charges.  Good tip about changing my email password!  I have to admit, I am bad about using the same password multiple times, but my bank password was unique. The security question they changed was my mother's maiden name! 4951

I don't even have a debit card.  I have my CC and an ATM card.  When they renewed my wife's ATM card, they made it both a debit and ATM card. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Ideally you should have a  separate email account that is only used for financials and nothing else. That way there is no cross contamination. Like for instance sharing your email on social media , or clicking something in the mailbox you know you shouldn't, once you have a clean email theier should  be no spam in that box to phish you with. Give it a complicated password thats different than everything else, and change the password monthly, you may may think I'm paranoid, but trust me, most people just dont realize how open they are to being hacked.
Its also very easy to guess the answers to peoples security questions if you can gain access to their facebook. 4951
