I just saw a dermatologist about these bumps all over me.  My PCP initially thought it was either scabies or some viral infection.  We treated for scabies but it still got worse.  He was out yesterday, so I saw his backup.  She was at a total loss, so she referred me to a dermatologist this morning.  The dermatologist looked me all over and wasn't sure what it is.  She doesn't think it's scabies.  It might be related to herpes simplex virus because I get fever blisters (or cold sores) 1-2 times each year.  She took a biopsy and did blood work.  I should hear something from her within a week.  Since she doesn't know if it is infectious or contagious yet, she advised me not expose others until we know.It started out on my hands and elbows, and has expanded to my arms, thighs, and feet.  They are slightly itchy.  They do hurt when pressure is applied and many are in my joints, so it's painful to grasp something.I will be happy to know what this is and how to treat it! 4951

Oh no!  I'm sorry this has not been resolved.  I'm glad you got to the dermatologist and she took a biopsy and did blood work.  Hopefully, you will have an answer soon. So, at the time, it is on your legs and arms but not your body?   Hang in there! 4951

Are the bumps just bumps?  Are they red or have puss in the center?   4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA:  So far, there are no bumps on my torso.  The bumps swell up but do not have any discharge from them.  The individual bumps are either pink or red.  If there are a group of them close together, the area turns purple. The ones on my elbows and some on my hands have scabbed over.

@Andreweggplant:  I was just reading that doctors sometimes prescribe Valtrex for Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1, cold sores or fever blisters) even though it was developed to treat HSV-2 (genital herpes). The thing is, when I get cold sores, they are very sore and form a blister filled with clear fluid.  I've squeezed a couple of the bumps and never get any discharge from them.Time and medical science will hopefully determine what these are and how to treat them!

At least it's not shingles. My dad got that on his side when he was about 75. I remember it was painful. 4951

@Humble Mommy: It's possible but not likely.  The descriptions only have a couple of similarities. Most of the possibilities the doctors and others mention say a compromised immune system could be a factor.  I had a full series of blood tests done a week and a half ago prior to a checkup on my diabetes and hypertension.  He said that ALL of the results were in the normal range and my A1C was 6.1 (the lowest it's been in a long time!)

Bed Bugs

@WskyTngoFxtrt:  Again, possible but not likely.  My wife has washed the bed linens every night in hot water and dried them in a hot dryer, as well as every stitch of clothing I wear and any towels I touch.  She also bought some spray for bedbugs and liberally sprayed the bed.My PCP initially thought it was either scabies or a viral infection.  He prescribed an insecticide cream (premethrin) that I applied for two nights from jawline to tips of toes.  He said if it was scabies, one application should start clearing up the bumps.  After the first application, I got new bumps, so I gave it another try.  I would think permethrin would work on bed bugs as well as scabies mites.THANKS FOR PLAYING "NAME THAT DISEASE!"  Emoticon

Have you taken any antibiotics or anything recently? Any kind of steroids?I had an allergic reaction once to an antibiotic which caused a huge flare up of reddish pink spots everywhere that hurt and itched badly. Nobody knew what it was and kept prescribing steroids. I went and had a biopsy done and it turned out the be psoriasis, started from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, and the steroids only made it worse. 4951

@Nope:  I haven't been on any antibiotics since my surgery in May.  I do get an injection of Depo Testosterone every 2 weeks, but I've been getting that for several years.  I did have that injection just this past Friday. If we don't get a handle on the cause of my bumps, I may skip my next injection!A couple of years ago, my wife was prescribed a new antibiotic (for her) and it turned her as red as a cooked lobster and caused severe itching!  We both know not to ever put her on Flagyl again!

I suggest you might set up an appointment with the dermatology department at Texas University in the Med Center.  See Dr. May or Dr. Mc Pharlen. They both have treated me for Melanoma and Basil Cell Carcinoma.  I have a complete check up at least every twelve months.  Not sure of the correct spelling of Dr. Mc.  They are both associated with MDA too.It can be miserable for sure. 4951
