Actually covered parking for rainy and windy days will be kind of nice. Plus if the dome's a/c still works that is an added bonus. Only drawback is you will not be able to grill in there. 4951

Nice with private funding from those yelling and screaming to keep it. This is a very expensive momento and keepsake. They should walk down memory lane and relive childhood on their own dimes!!! 4951

@PedroDePacas: Understood,
But unless you are extremely wealthy, you are not going to be able to afford to park in one of those spots on game day anyway.  But if you are really wealthy, and it's rainy and windy on game day, can I come tailgate with you? 4951

I have some good memories of racing golf carts in the astrodomes passageways and this seems like a inexpensive(if they do keep on budget which never seems to happens in large scale revitalization projects) and logical use of the space. Now they can host events in there and make some money(I'm sure there are gun shows already putting together proposals to rent the space every month when the project finishes) while keeping a city/county icon around. 4951

Until the city starts getting charged for maintenance and other services. I want to see that plan. Who is going to pay for that aspect of it. 4951

@allymansfield: No the vote you are speaking of was a referendum to use bond funds(200 some odd million) to turn it into a convention center. It was never about demolishing the structure(which isn't an option anymore as it has been marked in the National register of historic places).

@Retired_Engineer: Better they spend 100m on something that can generate revenue over 50 million tearing it down to spend another 100m to build something in it's place for the Texans(which they will obviously demand if there is a huge empty space next to their stadium).

@frebu: I can easily see the total cost for this project doubling or tripling.  Yes, it will bring in some income, but it will NEVER pay out considering the $105M up front cost, then add the maintenance $ that will be required to the structure.  Since it is a dome and not open-sided, they will almost HAVE to have the air-conditioning systems (or at least some of them) updated and operating for people who want to park there.  If not A/C, then huge ventilation systems to prevent the buildup of noxious fumes from vehicles collecting in the underground parking spaces.

Should have never made it a landmark. Many other arenas with just as much history or more have been leveled. Too late for that now. Taxpayers will now be on the hook for this thing long term. What happens when it defaults which it will with uber and other services in 10 years like self driving cars that drop you off somewhere with no driver. There will be no need for all this parking.  4951
