I need to get a kennel/cage for my mom's dog for when they are visiting.  After their last visit, I told her she needs to bring one but know she will not.  What kind is best?  She has to be in something she cannot escape from or tear up.  She is a small dog 12lb but very destructive.   Also, It has to be much bigger than she needs.  Mom is just sure the dog will have a seizure if she is confined.  Should I go with a metal or  plastic kennel?  She will ruin a fabric kennel.  We have to have something to put her in so she will not destroy my house as she has not been trained on what not to chew or where to pee.  She has, however, been trained to be an extension of my mom.  It makes it very difficult to go anywhere and we do have to go places we cannot take the dog.   4951

WOW...  I would go with metal.  Not sure she could chew that but if she tried she would break her teeth.  Maybe you could consider using some Rescue Remedy when you have to crate and leave her.  It calms the dog but does not knock them out.  It is all natural ingredients.I got a metal crate that fits my 30 lb dog (Cocker/Golden Mix) from Amazon for around $35.00.  It is nice because the bottom turns up, has latches and the tray slide in a slot so the dog cannot be an escaped artist between the edges of the cage. 4951

You don't want it too big. Just big enough for the dog to turn around in and tall enough that the dog can stand up in. If it's too large the dog will use it as a bathroom and it's a pain in the rear to have to clean out all the time 4951

The hard plastic ones are going to be a little more expensive but, it would seem more like a "den" as it is closed off on 3 sides. We have the wire crates for our pups and they work fine.  Our boy chewed the plastic bottom up the first time he was in it.  Needless to say, he does not have anything in there anymore.  I really think it is a matter of preference.  The metal crates go flat for easy storage. 4951

@Jpgurl: I know!  My mom will not allow the dog to be in a kennel that is the right size.  Therefore, she will never be housebroken.  I just want to prevent future damage to my bathroom where the little dog normally stays while we are gone.

Line the bottom of the crate with newspaper to make it easier to clean. Even if she tears it up, it won't matter. If you use the "pads" they sell, many have plastic that she could choke on, but newspaper just tends to just fall apart. 4951

My only problem with wire crates is that if the dog does not accept being crated they can hurt themselves. They are designed more as the illusion of being trapped then realistically being stuck.Wire Kennels+ Usually cheaper+ Folds away after use+ Easy sell+ Cleaning basic messes are easy-  Many vulnerable points for a restless dog to work at-  Can injure or kill a dog who forces it's face between bars- Plastic pans are often low quality leading to crackingPlastic Kennels+ Only one entrance so only one door which must be secured+ Much easier to clean horrible messes(diarrhea comes to mind, all mess will be contained within Kennel)+ No chance of dog getting stuck while you are out(depending on what type you buy)- More expensive- If you want the dog to be "part of the family" while kenneled(i.e. in the family room but not out)there is only one position where he can be seen/see.- Harder to sell(plastic absorbs smells and plastic can be scratched by nails thus lowering buyer interest)- Does not easily break down, and you must hold on to the unattached pieces once you do. 4951

Always boxed in wire crates in a corner, or at least used blanket over the top & sides, when I did rescue. I've used zip ties on the plastic crates to keep them together, because the connectors were lost or broken.  Yes, plastic will hold odors, it helps to clean with one of the products with enzymes in it. 4951

We also use a metal crate for the younger of the two dogs (older dog is house trained). We just drape two towels over the crate to give her a more "den" like feel, and we have a small dog bed for the bottom. She seems to like it well enough - I leave it in the family room while I work and she'll migrate between the crate and her couch for her 20 hours of daily napping. Emoticon 4951

@frebu  Wrong again! I have small plastic kennels for my cats - They have two doors, the one in front & one on the top, which works better for cats.  I only use plastic kennels to transport.  Emoticon 4951

When is your mom supposed to be in? I'm not sure if I still have it or not, but I had a pretty decent sized kennel over at my mom's house. If it is still over there, you're more than welcomed to use it, if you want. I can look for it tomorrow when I'm over there. If by some chance her dog does mess it up, I'm not worried about it. It's too small for my dogs anyway. 4951

@bp2018: Thanks so much!  I'm going to try to find a used one cause I feel it would be good to have one on hand.  They won't be here until next month.  I have a little while to find one on KW.com or the other place.  Several of you have offered to let me borrow a kennel.  I'll be taking one of you up on it if I do not find a used one.  Thanks to all of you!
