So I sent a Facebook message to Dave Martin's office about that new light on Northpark......see below.....

The new light on Northpark is short cycling and perhaps three or four cars get through. It backs NorthPark up particularly during the business week and at rush-hour peak times at least a mile or more. Some days you can barely get over the railroad tracks and it takes 40 minutes to get to the intersection at Woodland Hills. How much longer is this nonsense going to continue? Houston City Council member Dave Martin, can you answer this????

Part of the response I received back.....

"Thank you for contacting our office regarding the traffic signal at Northpark and Hidden Pines. Public Works and Engineering crews have been out at this intersection several times not only this year but also over the last two weeks and have concluded that the traffic signal is functioning as designed."

Really???? It was DESIGNED to to be green on the Northpark side for 12 seconds at a time??? It was DESIGNED to negatively impact all the traffic that goes up and down that incredibly busy and already oversubscribed road? What idiot did that?!?!? Nice going "designers". Perhaps THEY should try driving on Northpark during rush hour and really checking it out then! It shouldn't take 45 minutes to get from the railroad tracks at 494 to Woodland Hills. 👺

Russell Palmer has done this for years after a (storm) power spike...and way before they added another.

Sadly, don't hold your breath. 4951

I thought that the light was put in to help with the church traffic and eliminate the need for police directed traffic. If this was the intention why do they still have officers there directing traffic after church. Do we really need that light? 4951

@footballmom1: The problem in recent weeks(which is why it is so much worse now) is pretty simple. People making left hand turns from the left hand lane are not allowed to make the left without a light. This causes the lights on the other side to go red(even though the cross through isn't turning green for 10-15 seconds) when the left hand turn goes green on one side this is wasted time on the main road(as both the cross over AND going straight are red). The other problem is that instead of one cycle of lights they are now doing two(because both sides of Hidden pine are now protected greens when making a left) which is necessary coming out of NWH(do to the ridiculous signage that blocks any line of site on the other side) however should be shut off for rush hour evenings(it needs to be on during the morning for outbound commuters). Just throw up a sign "unprotected left turns between the hours of 3pm and 7pm" to warn people away during those times. But to say the light is working as intended? That is a joke, it is the most broken light I have ever seen whoever set the programming should be fired.

I saw some guys working on it Friday morning and thought maybe they were fixing it. But alas...same problems were happening on Northpark yesterday afternoon. Traffic was bumper to bumper all the way back to 494. When I go east in the mornings (when no one else is going east), I always hit that light red even though there aren't any cars trying to get on Northpark at all. I'm cool with having a traffic light there....as long as the cycle isn't jacked up. Which it clearly is.  4951

The problem is when st Martha's let out the cops mess w the lights. Then the light people come out fix the timing then Sat & sun mass it happens all over again. I do love the police helping out. Our very good friend works the lights but that is why it never is insync. Plus the lights are turned downward & you can't see them until you get up on top of them that you can see. It really needs to be worked out. 4951

I called councilman Martin's office this morning and spoke with a member of his staff. She suggested and in fact told me that each of us needs to call 311 every time there is a problem with that light. They have to track the reporting and follow up on each and every one of them. Obviously volume is what they need to be seeing. So, come on Kingwood, light up their switchboard!!! 4951

Wow, I got a reply pretty quick. Here it is. Sounds like they are fixing it.Thank you for contacting our
office regarding traffic signal synchronization issues on North Park Drive.
Over the last two weeks, traffic engineers have been onsite to monitor and
augment that traffic cycle at the intersection of North Park Drive and
Woodridge Parkway. I went out to verify the functionality of the light at
Woodridge Parkway with traffic engineers yesterday and they have lengthened the
east and westbound green time during peak hours. That signal is now functioning
correctly but there still remains an issue at the intersection of North Park
Drive and Loop 494. The infrastructure at this intersection is under the Texas
Department of Transportation’s jurisdiction but the City of Houston has
permission to control its timing. Late last week Public Works and Engineering
Traffic Engineers discovered that there is a mechanism that is broken in that
traffic signal which is causing significant backup on North Park Drive.

Thanks to the diligence of
Public Works and Engineering working with TxDOT and Montgomery County we have
been able to locate the problem and the appropriate parts have been requested
for the repair of this light which should greatly improve mobility along North
Park Drive. Again, we thank you for contacting our office and look forward to
having this issue resolved.

Sincerely,

I've had mixed results with contacting his office. Sometimes I get a great response and see an improvement and other times I get a response about other aspects of the big traffic plan that are coming but aren't even close to the problem I am letting them know about. I do find that I often get a personal followup from Mr. Martin which I appreciate. Addie Wiseman before Martin used to do that. Sadly I think our traffic engineers think a traffic light is the answer to just about everything! It isn't. Sometimes changing the approach lanes, adding a separate U-turn or even a round about can help in the right situation. And I just don't understand how these new traffic signals can get so out of sync. If my computer suffers a power failure and I restart the machine it still knows the date and time and does things that I have set up on a schedule. Our traffic signals must be running some really old software. 4951
