We have been hearing weird noises on the roof at night.  Almost like nails on a chalkboard.  Last night we heard it and my DH looked out the window and there was the neighbors cat staring at him on the roof.  It scares the crap out of my kid because she thinks something is trying to get in and it's usually right outside her window when she's sleeping.  This happens all night long.  We have the 2nd floor roof, garage is separate and small roof off the second floor over the front porch.  It walks all over all of it.I went to the neighbor last night to come get their cat off the roof just after 9 because it wouldn't get down.  He wouldn't open the door, told me that the cat knows how to get down and he has the neighbors cat on his roof all the time.  I told him it is scaring my DD.  He said there is nothing he can do about it.  I asked if he had any idea how I could keep his cat off my roof and he said no.  If it gets up, eventually it will come down.  I told him I also have a fairly big dog if it goes in my backyard and he said it's fine we have 2.What can I do about this?  This is an outside cat that just wonders the neighborhood all day.  Lays on my porch because we have a concrete slab with a slanted roof over it across the front of the house and drives my pets crazy because it's laying out there when they look out the window.  Besides shooting it (I don't want to hurt it) what can I do.  TIA for any help. 4951

@dotti573: Spray it with water.  I would say throw rocks at it, but you might break your own window.  Usually spraying with a water bottle or water hose will get them down, and if you bother then enough, they will avoid your house.

Go to Ace Hardware.  They have spray that is supposed to keep cats away.  Also, look on YouTube.  They have all kinds of videos about how to make your own concoction. 4951

@Andreweggplant: leash law , smeash law. Good luck getting someone to enforce that on cat. Not going to happen.

Trap the cat and turn it into animal control with the owners name and address explaining that it was continually on your property and he refused to control it. 4951

I hate to see cats wondering the neighbor hood because they can get hit by a car, in a fight or just killed.  I have cats and they NEVER go outside.  I just want this one to stay off my roof because it does it all hours of the night and it is kind of scary to hear it during the night on the shingles with it's nails.  I don't want my kid in my bed so the cat off my roof would be fine by me.As for moving, I've been in my house for 7 years.  We rent but right now have no plans on moving even though sometimes I would like to.  I just wish people were more responsible with their pets and kept them off my property.I told my DH last night I was going to start spraying it with the hose.  My DD's friends parents have a BB gun to keep the critters off the roof.  Don't want to hurt it though.  Just don't want it on my roof. 4951

@ZMAN: If I asked politely for them to control their animal because it was causing my kid distress and they refused/ignored it because they don't care? Yah, friends isn't really going to be an issue for me. Your neighbors allowing your cat to roam free is a courtesy not a right. If your cat(or any animal) is roaming where it shouldn't or peeing where it shouldn't(like say on peoples outdoor furniture, or their porches) then you should fix the issue not ignore it when it is brought to your attention.

A water hose should do it. After a couple of housings, I don't think they will come back. Someone said there's a spray for it I'd try that for sure first. 4951

@frebu: I agree with you on this.  One of the reason I went over was because a few years ago we had squatters move in next door and that really messed my DD up bad.  She was petrified.  She is finally to the point of feeling comfortable in our house again and now we are dealing with this.  They were renting and supposed to purchase so I am going to call the original owners and have a talk with them.  I don't want to make waves but I also don't want my child waking us up every night because of this.  It's been going on since right before school started.

You can make a concoction they don't like, using citrus peels and white vinegar. Then use one of those things that hooks to the hose for fertilizer, and spray the roof with concoction & water. The cat will avoid your roof.   4951
