I have to send a camera body to Canon Service and while I spoke with the lady there she said that using UPS instead of the USPS gets my package into the right department faster. So I bubble wrapped the body and then put it in a zip lock bag and then a small box with those air bags that they use for packing. Camera is safe and sound. I go to the UPS store up front and the lady weights the package and measures it and then asks what the contents are. I tell her a camera body. She asks it's value, it's an older model so I say $800. "Well UPS will cover up to $100 but if you want us to insure it for $800 then we have to repack it." "Why" I ask, "It is bubble wrapped and boxed very securely."  "Well UPS only insures it if our store does the packing; to repack it and insure it for $800 will be an additional $23 over the Ground shipping cost of $12.50. So the total would be $35.50." "I'll take Ground with just the base $100 insurance you offer." What a racket. 4951

If I pack it myself, I use UPS on line to ship it myself.  Unless something has changed you can insure it for what you want and just drop it off.  At Christmas I insured things for $300.00 and created the shipping online and dropped the pkg all ready to go off a the store..  No racket to deal with...

They told me same thing when I was sending my bil his watch he left here last year. She said the reason they wrap it themselves when insured for that much is because someone could put an expensive item in the box already broken and make a claim the it was broken in shipment. That makes sense. I see their point. 4951

FedEx did the same thing to me on a TV I was returning that broke in shipment. As soon as I opened the box, saw the screen broken, went through the return process, and brought to the fedex store to ship back. At the store they told me they would have to open the box, repackage, and tape it back up to ensure my packing job was sufficient. When I told them the only reason I'm having to ship it back in the first place was because fedex broke it the first time it was shipped. Regardless, the lady took 15 mins unpacking/repacking a broken tv to ship back.  4951

After your transaction, UPS probably put a smiley sticker on your box. This signifies customer is sending something valuable and breakable and would not accept our extortion fee of $23. The package goes to the back. The gorilla sees the sticky and jumps up and down on your parcel. Then it is sent. Then the sorry sir, we received your equipment in pieces... 4951

I trust UPS or FedEx over the USPS.  The USPS has lost too much mail and packages to trust them.   4951

You know when I ran my studio we used all the mail services and we packed our own stuff whether it was orders going out or gear for repairs. We did all the tickets on line and they  picked it up and never asked about repacking it or that they might not cover the insurance. I am wondering if it is more of a thing with a UPS store that does the shipping as well as custom packaging. I may call the UPS number tomorrow and find out. If so, next time I will just log in and do the ticket with insurance myself. 4951

They just want to make sure it is packed right to protect themselves against insurance claims. You know there are lots of scammers out there taking advantage. 4951
