Mayor Turner tells the state board to reject offensive textbook. In a letter to the Texas State Board of Education, Mayor Sylvester Turner expresses strong opposition to the adoption of the Momentum Instruction, LLC’s “Mexican American Heritage” textbook currently under consideration for the 2017 school year. “I have read parts of the proposed textbook as well as reviews from experts in history and Mexican-American studies.  In short, I find this textbook to be offensive,” said Mayor Turner.  “The purpose of instructional material is not to undermine our educational system, to push an ideological agenda or to disseminate inaccuracies, stereotypes and errors about our collective history.”The mayor’s opposition is based on his own reading of parts of the textbook as well as reviews by experts in history and Mexican-American studies who say the book is filled with errors.  The following is an excerpt from page 248: “Industrialists were very driven, competitive men who were always on the clock and continually concerned about efficiency. They were used to their workers putting in a full day’s work, quietly and obediently, and respecting rules, authority, and property. In contrast, Mexican laborers were not reared to put in a full day’s work so vigorously. There was a cultural attitude of ‘mañana,’ or ‘tomorrow,’ when it came to high-gear production.”“It is unbelievable that such a hateful stereotype appears in a textbook for Texas students. Politicized, prejudicial, erroneous textbooks must not be used as instructional materials for students,” said Turner.  “It is important for us to understand that Mexican-American culture is a vital and vibrant part of the United States’ rich and diverse culture and history.”Turner is urging adoption of an alternative textbook that features and celebrates the cultural and historical contributions Mexican-Americans and Hispanics have made to the building and collective identity of the United States.“We have the unique opportunity to develop a world-class textbook on Mexican-American studies created by academic and professional experts. Reject this purported textbook, and offer one that is scholarly, historical and accurate to educate all students about our nation’s rich history,” said the mayor.'Mexican American Heritage' is only available for the public to view onsite in San Antonio. http://learn421.net/momentum 4951

The way  that page is written gives false information on industialists and the workers as well -how about we teach real history, instead of a 'sanatized' vesion.Everyone needs to know what really happened to we can build on the good and learn from the mistakes. We don't need to worry about being "poliically correct" if we are honest about our past, own up to the bad things that were done, learn from them. As we learn better, we can and should do better. 4951

@deltadawn: Honesty regarding our past will no doubt be offensive to someone, then once again, someone will want compensation for it, centuries later.

@BooBear: Taking a stand on incorrect information is very straightforward and those errors should always be corrected. I just wish it could be done without stirring up additional racial issues. 4951

I find parts of our history very offensive, but facts are facts, so we learn from the mistakes, we build on what was done right, and move forward. 4951

@Burnsway: No, that's just categorized as offensive, because 2-3 kids per school are allergic, causing hundreds or more to not be able to have it for lunch. Unfortunately, some young kids will only eat PB&J and that is a major protein source for them.

@donnatella:

No this particular principle actually deemed it racist....nothing to do with allergies.

Pay attention to the person who wants to publish this book.  She is so racist.  Your kids are worth so much more. 4951

I'm not particularly interested in what the mayor thinks of the book but the fact that multiple college level professors and teachers in this field who were asked to review the book found so many errors that they can't even begin to figure out any way to correct it. They recommend just flushing it altogether. This isn't just about printing things that are politically correct but is really more about outright factually incorrect. Kind of interesting that the publisher, Momentum Instruction LLC has never published a textbook before this and that the authors of this textbook have no credentials in Mexican History. Also the owner of the company is Cynthia Dunbar who is a former member of the SBOE and holds an extreme right wing ideology. And several news sources said the phone number listed for the company is a Google number that went unanswered. Dunbar's main work now is as an administrator at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia —
a religious college founded by the conservative televangelist Jerry
Falwell, who died in 2007. The 2 lead authors for this textbook are Jaimie Riddle and Valerie Angle who have no credentials or degrees in history. Riddle’s profile describes her as a
“professional developer of conservative instructional content.” She
lists qualifications including: “Extensive
book reviewer on Amazon.com, focusing on exposing subtle anti-Western
themes in popular children’s literature. Particular emphasis on
socialist, anti-modern, and anti-American motifs; also revisionist
history.” The profile claiming to be Angle describes her as a “Subject
Matter Expert,” as well as a Wellness Expert who is “an overwhelmed
woman’s secret weapon.” And we wonder why Texas schools rank near the bottom of this nation? 4951

Political correctness has doomed our country.

@CC1974: Do you even know what you mean when you say that?  People say that every time they want to bash any movement others believe is in the right direction. So you are saying the derogatory statements made about Mexicans work ethics are politically correct. What is even the purpose of slinging that phrase anymore; it's so overused for every purpose it's ridiculous at this point. I heard some blowhard use that statement over five times in one discussion where he wasn't actually saying anything! So what are you saying without that silly rhetoric that everyone is slinging around? Are you saying the book excerpts were correct?

@donnatella: I thought it was because the younger kids were sharing and one kid almost died from a sandwich that wasn't his own. What does that have to do with political correctness?
