Gun laws in a city work as well as a dry county when the next one over is wet.  4951

@ForeCPA90: My point is the numbers by themselves support both arguments. They are a snapshot, they aren't the big picture.

@CantStandTex: Agree.

@ForeCPA90: Big picture is that they have a culture drenched in drugs and gang violence.  Both are so commonplace that murder is just another part of daily life.  I've no idea how to feasibly fix that, but until there is a shift in that culture from within, we have no real choice but to sit back and watch it burn.  Sad because Chicago is such a cool town otherwise.On the plus side, if you drill down into those stats you'll find that it's pretty much confined to the south end of the city.  Emoticonoverty, gangs, and ghettos pretty much from south of Cermak Street all the way to Gary, Indiana.  4951

@CantStandTex: Just like Obama's unemployment stats. Stats can and are manipulated to benefit the party, person, organization or crusade. Global warming, sorry, climate change, gun violence, you name it. I was really pointing out the fact that cities that have been and are controlled by members of the Democrat party seem to have bigger problems. Just my opinion. And yes I know about opinions.

@shodan66: Culture to be blame for sure guns alone are harmless it is who is behind that makes guns dangerous. So, yes, Culture need to change from within. Values, respect, laws, and compassion are missing nowadays. How did we get here?

Maybe someone should tell Colin Kaepernick these stats, since he's so concerned with black lives mattering....

@coco1248:

I think a lot of it is (and not even just Chicago, but any of the "ghetto" areas) that so many people work really hard to make it out of the 'hood. While I can respect that and can see why they would want to do that, to me it would be more beneficial if people stayed and helped spread their values to their community and helped to rebuild it. If the people that are able to overcome their circumstances and make something of themselves constantly flee the same places they grew up instead of staying to become role models, the next generation of kids are doomed to repeat the cycle. Without the positive influences from within, nothing will ever change. 4951

@TXSG: Generic statement backed up by one city does not make that so. Is Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus, El Paso on this list? How about New York, Philly, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Indianapolis, Buffalo & San Francisco? All (& many more) have current Democrat incumbents.  Chicago's problem is not guns and it is not the democratic party. It can be broken down into components though. Family, schools, policing, communities.Edit: I will also add Money to this list, because how it is spent, where it is spent & what good it does depends on those 4 categories (and more).

@CantStandTexDenver County has elected Democrat Mayors for a long time, but Denver County is very small.  There are much larger counties in the metropolitan area that are much more conservative.  There are definitely some sketchy areas of town, but nothing like I saw in DC, Baltimore and Philly in the 1990's.  I read an interesting book called "Hillbilly Elegy"  it talked about the culture of the coal workers that moved to Ohio for steel jobs.  It was a memoir and the author identified with other cultures where people are stuck in the rot of their communities and how difficult it is to get out and change.  4951

@MarT: Curiously, according to the author, what role did politics play in that culture? Considering the complete collapse of both Coal & Steel when compared to the poverty and collapse of some areas of our country I too can draw correlations. The deck is stacked against some.

So there is about 100 people being shot and killed a month. I guess they will not run out of gangsters anytime soon so the numbers will keep going up .So does there come a time when , since nothing else is working, the cops and national guard just go in house to house checking for guns? Do they need to worry about violating civil rights when murder and wounding over 400 a month has become an emergency in their cities? They are violating everyone else's civil rights by shooting them and keeping people living in fear? How about the poor kids that are shot or sleeping and shot through drivebys? It's a harsh solution for a harsh problem. Why doesn't BLM march through these poor and dangerous areas where black lives should matter. 4951

@CantStandTexHe actually got out himself, went into the military, got a degree after and went to Yale Law.  He thinks both sides often do more harm than good, trying to help.  Thinks the left leaves them thinking it is hopeless and they will be stuck forever and even enables them to stay stuck.  He thinks the right is too simplistic with the pull yourself up by the bootstraps attitude.  Which is hard when you don't have the tools to do so.  He didn't really claim to have the answers.  It was an interesting read.  4951
