Do kids say the Pledge of Allegiance in public school?  If not when did that change and why?  Isn't that part of teaching good citizenship?    4951

In the 80s we started many days without the pledge. 4951

I think some schools stopped a while back, and then started back up using the original wording. 4951

@CantStandTex: True- it may seem ridiculous, but it is required by the state.  Students recite the Texas Pledge in both public and private schools.  12 other states also have pledges to their state flag.  However, you can choose not to recite the pledge- it's not like you will be hauled off to jail.  You can also choose to move to another state that doesn't recite the pledge to the state flag.  You have choices- you don't have to live in a state that you can't stand.

@Toriv: Required and Choose not to, are the opposite of each other. All pledges are voluntary and not required. Sort of like the freedom to live in a state I Cant Stand. My quick search turned up 17 states, with 2 that have statements concerning a pledge to die for that state if necessary. My kids stood for the pledge, recited the Allegiance to their flag and country and stood silently for the Texas Pledge. I had quite an argument with a 6th grade teacher over this some years back.

@Toriv: That it is required by the state makes it meaningless, you can't force a meaningful pledge. the kids are not pledging anything, they are repeating words they are forced to repeat.   Do we really think these kids are thinking about the meaning of these words and actually making a pledge each morning?Same thing for prayer, it's not praying if only your mouth is saying it, your heart has to say it also. 4951

@ForeCPA90:   I would think they would learn the meaning of the pledge form an early age.  I would think this is something all teachers in elementary would teach.I homeschool my kids and it is in every history curriculum I've used.

@ForeCPA90: of course- kids are just going through the motions and repeating what they are told to memorize.  I went to a public high school.  We did not have American flags in the classroom and we did not recite the pledge, so this is new to me.  It's not a big deal though, at least for me.

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA: Oh I do believe they know the meaning, don't get me wrong, but are they thinking about it when they recite it? For it to truly be a pledge you have to be not only thinking about it, but meaning it. The part where they teach the meaning is much more meaningful than repeating the words over and over in my opinion.
This is purely conjecture on my part of course.   4951

(2) the pledge of allegiance to the state flag in accordance with Subchapter C, Chapter 3100, Government Code. That being said a student may opt out:
(c) On written request from a student's parent or guardian, a
school district or open-enrollment charter school shall excuse the
student from reciting a pledge of allegiance under Subsection (b).

(d) The board of trustees of each school district and the governing
