This is so weird to me.  Middle schoolers aren't allowed to carry backpacks between classes?  Does anyone understand this rule?  (I don't think it's a safety thing, since 8th graders are allowed to bring backpacks).  And more importantly, does anyone have any suggestions for how my poor kid can manage all of the STUFF she has to carry? They have these giant zippered binders with a shoulder strap, and that's great, but she still has a backpack with her orchestra binder and a textbook from time to time and a few other things.  (And the giant binder thingie will not fit in any kind of backpack, even just for the journey to and from school).  Plus a lunch kit because the cafeteria and lunch lines are, apparently, chaotic.  (When she carried her full-sized backpack to school the first day or two, the lunch kit went IN the backpack.  But since the full-sized backpack doesn't really fit in her locker, she's downsized to a smaller backpack, or, today, a tote bag, and now the lunch kit doesn't really fit.)  PLUS she's now carrying her violin back and forth from school.So.  Every morning, she's got her binder thing over her shoulder.  Her backpack or whatever.  her lunch kit in one hand and her violin in the other.  That's a lot of stuff for a tiny girl to be loaded down with.  God forbid a strap fall off a shoulder.  I can't imagine how much people hate being behind her in the car rider line, as she's getting all of this stuff OUT of the car and then arranged in such a way so that she can carry it.  And she's overwhelmed and losing things and having a hard time getting organized - which stresses her out, because she's typically a very organized person.Middle school is a bigger adjustment than I thought it would be.  She and I both need to get our **** together.  4951

I feel your pain. My oldest played trombone and he was small for his age. Poor thing rode the bus, too! He figured it out, your daughter will too.  4951

My son weighed the binder it's 12 lbs lol. I hate the 6th grade being at middle school. My 6th grade was still at elementary & no Pre Ap classes so this is so different. I was freaking out. He is taking all Pre ap & I just don't want to overload him. Yes I think it's weird you can't take your backpack to class. He rides his bike 4951

Not much makes sense in public schools these days. My grandkids in middle school tell me they don't get text books issued or lockers. "What if you have an assignment and need the book" I asked. "Hasn't happened yet," was their reply. 4951

I asked my son about this last year when he was in 7th and he said it is because they don't have enough lockers at his school to accommodate all of the 8th graders, that is why they are allowed to carry backpacks. The other grades are expected to keep everything in their lockers. It still doesn't make any sense to me because your binder, plus books can still be very heavy to carry just between classes. Doesn't seem fair.  4951

My daughter is in 6th grade and her experience is exactly like it was for me 20 years ago. I agee sixth grade should be in elementary school, but they won't be changing that any time soon. My daughter is naturally muscular and she's getting bullied by smaller girls. She could easily beat them up, but she wants to stay out of trouble. 4951

I teach in another district, and our students are not allowed backpacks in the classroom because there is not enough room. Some classes have 37 kids in it-plus backpacks make it impossible to move around the room. 4951

Holy crap, 37 kids in one classroom?! Surely that is a violation of state student:teacher ratios! As a parent I would be ****. That is way too many kids to be in one class. 4951

Just to clarify.....I didn't go to school here...and back in my day we had lockers. Maybe it's not feasible here...but two could share a locker easy....4 doable. why don't they have lockers here? 4951

We went to orientation the other night and the class rooms are very small.  My DD rides her bike also and she had to switch to a smaller backpack because the bigger one doesn't fit in her locker but the smaller one barely fits the gigantic binder.  Mine is the same way with all the pre-ap classes and that binder is ridiculous. 4951
