The thread about first names reminded me of a conversation I had the other day.

My friend told me she was going to replace her middle name with her maiden name when she gets married. I always thought you dropped your last name and took his last name. What did you do when you got married? 4951

Tell your friend to keep her name. That has become more of the norm especially with women in the work force. I didn't change mine for my hubs. It's a big pain in the ***. I learned that firsthand in my first and last divorce/marriage. This is my second marriage. I told him going in that I'd never change it.  4951

On Facebook, I have two last names, so people who knew me back in the day can recognize me. Everywhere else, I dropped my maiden name and replaced it. 4951

There's lots of ways now.  I kept my middle name, dropped my maiden name, took hubby's surname.  My sister made her maiden name her middle name and took her DH's surname.  Others keep their middle name and hyphenate both last names.  I actually heard of couples creating a whole new surname for their family. 4951

@Nurse3: That's what my wife did as well.  That used to be pretty common, but times have changed and women can choose differently now.Edited:  As stated, as more women enter the professional world, their established maiden name is important.  Two engineer friends of mine married and she wanted people to recognize her last name but show a tie to her husband, so she used Baker-Hopkins as her last name.  Baker being her maiden name.

I am on my 2nd marriage. My last name is my daughter's and Dh's last names. I don't see it as keeping my ex's last name, I see it as sharing my daughter's. 4951

I dropped my middle name and replaced it with my maiden name. I took my husband's surname.

I explained it to my family that mom only called me my first and middle name when she was mad at me. I prefer my maiden name versus the thought of being in trouble. 4951

Both my wife and my oldest daughter dropped their middle and used their last name for their middle, and took husband last name for their last.
