Interesting reading I found today and thought about sharing it .[If you wake up one morning and feel down, the first thing you should do is to try to identify the thoughts that are going through your mind that put you in this state. These can generally be divided into three sources:1) They may have to do with something external. Perhaps someone has done or said something to you that has made you upset, our something has happened that is upsetting to you.2) Alternatively, it may be something internal, such as a physical illness which is affecting your emotions.3) The most common source, however, is your own imagination. You may imagine that someone is planning something against you or something bad is going to happen to you in the future.In most cases, it is the third category that is the source of our depression. It is our imagination that goes wild and causes us to worry and be fearful. I like to say that the word FEAR stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Being that the evidence is only in our imagination, we need to take charge of our thoughts, instead of letting our thoughts take charge of us]. 4951

Oh my gosh, I've been dealing with this. I am my own worst enemy! I realize my thoughts keep me from being happy but sometimes I can't help feeling the way I do.
 
@lola: I know what you saying we all have this horrible ups & downs but Think Good and all will be or IS GOOD. Is the power of positive thinking knowing our maker is in our soul. All Is Good.

This has been an issue for me too, recently.  When I do something silly or wrong or don't respond the way I think I should have, I dwell on it long after it's over.....I heard Kerry Shook of Woodlands Church this morning speak of this.  He says sometimes we know that we've been forgiven of bad decisions by God, but the problem we have is forgiving OURSELVES and forgetting about it - I have those tapes playing in my head where I criticize and am hard on my own self and can't get them from playing over and over.....that does me no good and is in fact very destructive to one's self.  I have to work on that, and pray on that for some help, because Lord knows I do it way too much.  I seem to spend a lot of time in the "past", instead of "in the moment".....gotta work on that and I'm sure a lot of people do the same thing.  I'm my worst critique and you know, the world's is hard enough without us beating down our own selves..... 4951

@magnoliamam: It takes practice being aware and stopping the negative thoughts Right THEN I& there. Because we will never stop thinking but we can change our thoughts by making it a Good Reality.  If necessary FAKE IT UNTIL YOU BREAK IT look in the mirror forcing a smile soon becomes a laugh, cook, bake or r-e-l-a-x by doing something u like or enjoy. Be good to YOUR mind it will do good to your soul.

Ok y'all know me ( kinda) and I don't mean this in a snarky way- but ( I know Dr Phil would say... The real message is behind the butt-😜) Y'all didn't k ow this???? Seriously, this is classic. Here's what I learned ( got a whole 4 year degree and everything) and my son's psychologist made it crystal clear to me in his analogy.Each of us has a tape that plays nonstop in our heads. 99% of it is negative. You can't, you're not, don't do... Ect ect ect.  The trick is to press STOP  and play a different tape- I CAN, I Am , DO!!  And replace I HAVE to xyz, I NEED to do xyz, I SHOULD do xyz ( which are  all negative pressures)  with I AM going to do xyz , I WANT to do xyz.I know it's hard - trust me - optimisim springs eternal in me normally and just a few short months ago I was at Rock bottom ( with my son- seriously I have never been so down) but the kind of emotional thinking that this article talks about is the ONLY reason I got some (4 hours) sleep at night.If you get rid of the negative tape and start talking/thinking positive actions it really does make a difference in how you live 4951

I usually feel great when I wake up. It is during the day or before I go to bed that I feel like a complete failure and think about suicide. Mornings are fine for me and I am happy to eat a good breakfast. 4951

Suicidal thoughts need to be addressed post haste.
 
Two research doctors affiliated with the Brain & Behaviour Research Foundation in NYC
have discovered what they think is a suicide gene. Because you mentioned that your son had been suicidal in the past, it might be helpful to contact the foundation & see if you can get some information about the work that the researchers are doing.

I must be the oddball here.......i wake up feeling great.....same during the day.....and when i go to bed.....sleep a death sleep 8 hours or more every day.....Only when i see that lying worthless shiftless no account lower than snake sheit in a trail rut whackjob hag hillary and her liberal minions on tv do i get in a less than stellar mood.... 4951
