Recently, I have been watching some of the Tiny House shows on DIY. Beyond the construction and innovative designs of these micro living spaces, there is a message that grabbed my attention - Do I really need all this stuff?? The answer was yes right off the bat. [I mean, how would I ever part with the 732 kitchen gadgets I have accumulated over the years? Emoticon ] But after REALLY thinking about it, I don't. I'm not a hoarder by any stretch of the imagination, but I now see there's definitely room for improvement. Improvements that can lead to a better, more efficient lifestyle. And not just at home, but work as well. That gave me reason to look into organizing a little more, and I found this post below in a blog from a local professional organizer (Ellen Delap). It brings up some helpful points that I will probably be putting to use soon. -------------Have you heard of the 80/20 rule?  It's also known as the Pareto principle.  The concept is that  roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. It's seen as a short cut to being more focused, more organized and more productive. Here's some statistics that show the 80/20 rule. At home, we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time.At work, 80% of a company's profits come from 20% of its customers. When you volunteer, 20% of the volunteers do 80% of the effort. What are the benefits you can find in applying the Pareto Principle to your life?Pare down 80% of your clothes. Our closets are jammed and we have nothing to wear.  It's time to  use the hanger trick where you turn your hangers around of the clothes you wear and you see what's been worn and what's not. It's a study in what you truly wear.  Once you see this, you are ready to let go of your unworn clothes.  When your closet is filled with only what you wear, it's easy to get ready.  Spend 80% of your time on the most important 20% of your projects, tasks or action items.Prioritize the most important projects for work and home. It might seem like everything is equally important, however it's not possible.  Drill down what's your priority by aligning with your goals and values.  Schedule time for these during a high energy time so you can maximize your efforts.  Write these on your calendar to ensure success.  File and scan documents using the 80/20 rule.Have you created files and never went back to these?  Where can you find the information, when you need it, most easily?  Know what to keep and keep what you need.  You might be keeping 80% more than you need so pare down ruthlessly.Rethink 80% of your activities and engage in the 20% you love.We are busy! We find ourselves joining more than one book club. Our kids are in multiple activities.  It's time to rethink 80% of our activities. You will find that you are less stressed and enjoy your commitments more.Where else can you apply the 80/20 rule at home, at work and to your life?  You will find that it's one of your most referenced math equations to help you manage your time, your priorities and your stuff. http://professional-organizer.com/WordPress/category/productivity/ 4951

If you do decide to to get rid of some of that "stuff".. There's a lot of folks taking things to Baton Rouge to help folks restart . Would be a good place to send the things that are gathering dust.... 4951

I cannot stand "stuff" I cannot stand clutter. . It means more cleaning, more dusting. I hate to clean so I bring nothing extra in that has to be dealt with. I don't have pictures all through my home. If you were to walk in you would see no signs of me having children. No pictures anywhere. The grand girl has a lot of stuff on the fridge. I still have a lot of her toys around. She spends quite a bit of time here. Things have to be even for me.

If I could live in a hotel type environment, just 2 cheesy pic's on the wall..I'd be perfectly fine. Those tiny houses make me nervous because they try to stuff too much in them. I don't want usable space, I want empty space. 4951

I agree about the 80/20 but I am not a sentimental person it would be more a 98/2 rule for me. If my home were to burn down, providing the people and pets were safe..the only thing I would care about are my Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls from my nanny. Everything else, who cares.

The only thing I have more of than I need is boots.

We are in the downsizing mode right now to get ready for our move and I'm having a hard time getting rid of anything in my garage . I go out there and just stare and can't seem to figure out why she won't let me take all my tool boxes when she gets to take all her shoes . 4951

The problem I have with the tiny house fad is price. Im sorry....Im not paying 75 grand for 200 sq feet not even including land price. That would make a typical 2000 sq ft home in Kingwood, 750 thousand dollars plus land value....RIP OFF.....and they all say they are doing it to save money????? They are getting ripped off!

Plus I would kill my family in that close quarters. Before you spend 75 grand on a tiny house go buy a big 500 dollar tent and live in it with your family. If you still love each other in a month you might be ok in an over priced bedroom on wheels.

@staylifted: Butch up, Sally. Tools make and save you money. Shoes are a woman's way of saying, "nobody likes me."

My DW keeps suggesting I get rid of the clothes in my closet that I seldom wear anymore so she can have more room to store all the clothes she never wears. 4951

We have separate closets and a mutual cold weather/camo & gear closet. Since most of my stuff in that closet was under the buy once, hurt once philosophy, I'm not parting ways with any of it.

@sweetie: It is. Being seasonal, it can play mind games with people if it's high end stuff. Once Summer hits and we're wishing for cooler weather, the thought creeps in that it might not fit by the time Fall rolls around and lifestyle adjustments can be made to make sure it does.

And I may or may not have pushed her to go on a trip and make some purchases prior to family planning and development. It's taken her a little while, but I caught her trying some of it on back in June to see how close she was to being back in it. Since then, she's dropped that last 10lbs and is just so proud of herself. 4951
