We are now on our 2nd Craftsman self propelled push mower and this one also doesn't hold up to the brand name. Lots of issues with it and now shopping for a new mower.

What brand/kind of mower do any of y'all use? 4951

Honda makes good mowers. I've had a craftsman for 20 years + and cut serious tall grass with it. Don't be suckered into lawnboy or snapper. I've seen plenty of those mowers go down after the first year. 4951

I too have had Craftsman over the last 15 years.  The last batch of Craftsman items, mower, weedeater and blower, I purchased I felt to be pour quality.I took the plunge 3 years ago and bought a Honda mower and Echo weedeater and blower.  I am really happy with those items.  I purchased at Small Engine Supply in Humble,  I prefer to support local businesses when I can.  Great guys over there. 4951

It is sad the way the Sears quality has gone down. No wonder they are struggling. 4951

I had a Honda for 10 years when my son gave me his Toro; he had got it and then decided his schedule was too crazy and just went with the lawn service. I sold the 10 year old Honda for $275 on Craig's List, it still ran fine and started on the first pull. The Toro he gave me is not only self propelled but has a key/electric motor starter. One thing I always do is really clean the mower after use, blow off the dry stuff as you leaf blow and if the grass was damp I use the garden hose and spray both the top and underside of the deck down and then let it dry out thoroughly in the sun, never store it wet or it promotes rust. Also if you don't mow much in the colder months use a fuel stabilizer. Modern gas is bad for simple engines and old gas causes the carburetor jets to clog up which means a rebuild. Change the oil, air filter and spark plug once a year and sharpen the blade as well as oil moving parts like the wheel axles. FWIW, I mow every week in the spring through early fall, sometimes every 4-5 days if we have a lot of rain. In the winter I tend to mow every 2-3 weeks to even the lawn out and get up leaves. My mowers get a lot of work. 4951

It isn't necessarily the brand of mower but the engine. Honda GCV engines, which are used in many brands of mowers/pressure washers are quite finicky. I have a craftmans pressure washer that's about 12 years old, have had to rebuild the honda twice. Have a craftman lawnmower about the same age, briggs and stratton engine, and the thing won't die.

I would look at the brand of engine, look up online reviews, and go from there. The brand of mower in most cases won't matter, unless you're getting high end.

Side note, most issues are easy to fix and parts aren't much. If you have a free afternoon and look up on youtube, not much work typically. Worst case you take engine apart and end up tossing a box of parts before buying a new one. 4951

Thank you all for the suggestions. Yes, it seems like the craftsman products aren't what they used to be. We clean this one after each use and hubby has changed out the thermostat, the filter, carburetor kit, blade and spark plug. You would think it would run like a new mower.  4951

Thermostat? Maybe it's not a lawnmower? 4951

Yes, there is a thermostat behind the muffler that controls the choke on the carburetor as the exhaust heats up it causes the choke on the carburetor to open. 4951

@ET: your lawnmower doesn't have a thermostat? Mine stops working when I'm too hot, once a cold beer is used to cool down, starts working again.

@cowboysfan0314: Almost everyone that has a good Craftsman mower it is old as dirt.  I bought one back in 2004 and it was not worth a dam.  I also had a Troy bilt weedeater I bought new in 03 and I had to replace it a few weeks ago.  The new ones are garbage compared to the older ones.  Honda is a good choice if you want something different but alot of the other brands are made by MTD with someone else's name on it.  Good chance MTD makes Craftsman also so you might want to check before you buy.  I was looking at a Craftsman chainsaw a while back and noticed it looked exactly like a Poulan.

Bought a Husquavarna, had it for 3 years and no issues. Really no complaints. Starts on the first pull every time. I do wish I would have went with the bigger engine but it cuts fine. Think I will change the oil this week and clean the spark plug. I only put supreme gas in it and also hose it off after use, especially the underside around the belt and axles. 4951
