After seeing all that goes on in the workplace, if I was an employer:
 
1- personal cell phones would be banned in the work place. Each employee would have 2 lines. You would give family and friends the personal line.
That line would be set to time out when usage reached 15 minutes per day, except during lunch. It would have a 30 minute timer. Personal calls on the company line would result in discipline.
 
2- Facebook and all other social media would be blocked.
.
3- if you were observed using a cell phone while operating a company vehicle, personal vehicle on company business or rental you would be fired.
 
4- if observed walking and using an electronic device you would be fired.
 
Pay attention folks. There is a whole world out there beyond the screen of your phone. 4951

If you were an employer you would have extremely high turnover costs.Edit:  Except for 3, 3 is a good rule and one that many reputable companies already employ.   4951

@dac1842: 1. Too expensive to enforce and unnecessary. It also affects morale. 2. Not unreasonable and very cheap and easy to do. Many companies already do it. 3. Some companies already have this policy. Makes sense. 4. Dictator attitude. Not a good one. If I was on your board, I would vote to enforce 2 out of 4.

I agree with the cellphone usage to a certain extent. I have a coworker that is constantly sitting in his work area looking down at his phone while his area is slow but doesn't bother to get up and help someone else out like we all tend to do except him with his phone sitting. There are also people here that go and talk on their phone everyday outside or are just walking around in the office, its frustrating but it is hard to police it as well.  4951

Yah.........blocking all social media sites on your networks is one of the most annoying things a company can do. So many companies have switched to social media as their only information outlet it can cause basic operations issues. An example, the Navy advancement results announcements are made exclusively through facebook now. The Navy had the website blocked on their network. Everybody and their mothers are waiting on that list(even if you are not up for advancement as a jerk getting advanced to E-5 can screw up a shop, while an transfer(from another shop/job) who doesn't know the gear getting advanced to E-6(so they can stop pretending to work on gear) can be a blessing). It caused major issues(mostly with the E-6's because of how big a deal it is for them. 4951

I started a new job just a few weeks ago, they asked if i wanted to use my personal phone as my company phone, they pay me a per diem, or i can tote two phones.  I do not have FB on my phone and it is blocked at this company, no great loss to me Emoticon i do not text and drive and it is against policy for both of the companies I have recently worked for.  In company vehicles AND personal vehicle while on company property!As for personal calls, we all take them when we are available and make our calls at lunch time mostly.  Life happens and people need to be reached sometimes.  Do people abuse it, yes, do the bosses normally know who they are? Yes.  Should it reflect in their review? Yes.  Dont punish all for some's mistakes.  JMO.  I get paid to work, I work.  Do I sit here and read posts and comment on occassions, yes, but not when I have work to do.  All of my work comes in via email.  I am chained to this desk waiting on my work to come in.  When it isnt in my in box, i read the paper and the forum.  Do i get to do this daily, nope.  I would rather be busy than sit and find something to read, makes for a looooong day. Especially on rainy days that I am trying to stay awake. 4951

I have a coworker's that watch TV on their phone. One of them has watched many a funeral on her phone, those last for hours.
 
Twenty five years ago I'd have been mad and raising hell. Now not so much, as long as what they're doing doesn't impact my work flow I don't care. That philosophy has served me well. Can't change it, don't sweat it. 4951
