I do not know anyone personally but always talk to the drivers and they "say" they do OK-which is surprising to me as I would think that gas and miles on your car would eat your lunch long term. 4951

I know of someone who tried it. Didn't make much money because the only car she had in the household that was "new enough" to drive according to Uber's requirements, was an SUV and after factoring in expense for fuel, there wasn't much money made to justify the time and mileage. If you have a newer, fuel efficient car, then it could be worth the effort. All you can do is try it out. 4951

It can be worth it especially if you put in a lot of hours.  Your vehicle needs to be fairly new. 4951

54 cents a business mile driven is the the standard deduction.  Do Uber drivers get the deduction? 4951

You also have to take into consideration the hassle of being able to drive in Houston. Houston has it's own rules: backgroud check, fingerprints, car inspection etc. If you don't have it, uber will not let you pick up in city limits - you can drop off but not pick up. To me, that is a wasted trip. http://www.driveuberhouston.com/tnc/ 4951

@RogueHippEE: made as in after factoring his costs or total?

You have to get commercial insurance on your vehicle. If you have an accident while on the clock for Uber, your personal auto insurance will not cover it.

Since you are using your car for business for hire, you will also have to pay property tax on the vehicle every year.

@donnatella:

I've also heard mixed opinions.... most of them negative.

That really doesn't equate to much however....one should try it out to see personally.

I would think due to us being so close to IAH there is decent money to be had shuttling airport travelers to and from.

From past experience as a jetsetter....id much rather take an uber than getting into a tired, ex-police car, spray painted Chevy smelling of bad cologne, pine air freshener and puke. Lol 4951

Get a waiter job, most restaurants are losing their summer hires to college. If you hustle and have some smarts you can make good money. Make sure the place serves liquor so the checks are bigger. 4951

@notfromhere: It's after factoring in the cost of gas but not wear and tear of the car. Since it is/was a summer job, I would guess he did not get different insurance, etc.

Well you do have to factor in the car costs. The IRS figures that $0.50+ per mile is about what it costs. If that is what they figure it is probably a lot higher. Ultimately you have to repair/replace that car. That is when the deal goes south in most personal delivery schemes. 4951

Not sure how much the drivers make, but I love the service. There might already be some competition with other drivers in the Kingwood area though. My wife and I use it all the time whenever we do date night and we plan on having a few drinks. We live in Forest Cove and have never had to wait more than 5 min for a driver to pick us up. I also cant see how the drivers are making much money on local trips like mine. We took an Uber to Mollys Pub on Sat and the fare was only $5.50. So low I felt bad and tipped the driver. I was surprised when the driver told me tipping was not required. I told him to keep it anyway.  4951

@ZMAN:

On a trip like that the driver made about $4
