A female friend I have used to go there. She said she felt intimidated because everyone there was really into what they were doing and were way more toned and developed than she was so she switched to 24hour Fitness. She said there was a lot of posing at Golds gym but I think if you are really into fitness and in really good shape you might like it there. They have some good coupons in the mail sometimes so maybe you can try it to see how it works for you without making too much of a commitment.  4951

It's not a big Gold's so if you go at peak times, I would go visit during that time to see if it's too crowded for you. Biggest issues there are that no one, and I mean almost NO ONE re racks their weights.  I am a morning guy so I often have to go hunt for equipment left by the night people.  They used to be bad about not fixing equipment but they have gotten much better about this. The staff is friendly there, the location is fantastic and the hours are good (except I wish they opened earlier on Sundays).  Emoticoneople seem relatively friendly, I usually have my earbuds in and go to work without much chit chat as I am usually pressed for time so not sure really how friendly others are.  At peak times you will see a lot of posing like the above poster stated, but other than replacing equipment everyone seems relatively courteous.     4951

Make sure you're serious about it before joining, because that's a hard membership to get out of. 4951

I much prefer the planet fitness model myself. A gym for normal people. Hell they have pizza nights,at a gym, to entice people to come work out. Hell their highest tier member level is only 250 a year and includes a daily guest pass(i.e. if you and your spouse want to work out together you only have to get the one membership because the pass can be used every day for the same person) while the low tier is 140 so if you are going to the gym on a budget(or you know........if you are honest and admit you won't go near as often as you should) it won't break the bank. Can't beat the ease of gold's in kingwood tho but I will say........make sure everything they tell you is in writing, if they refuse to do so........they are lying to you. That Gold's gym sold us on a bunch of half truths and straight out lies so keep that in mind(I doubt any of the people involved in my issue still work there as it was years ago, but many of the staffers at a gym will tell you anything you want to hear to get you to sign up so don't take their word for it) 4951

Joined in January and have been really happy. It does get busy between 4:30-7 but if you are on a
Mission to workout and goal oriented you'll be fine. I was worried I'd be intimidated but everyone
Has been very friendly. 4951

I teach cycling there - ( Group Ex). The price is good- lots of machines, free weights cardio machines. It does get very very busy from 4-9. And yes people don't re rack their weights and there are people who sit on the machines forever between sets- 2 of my personal pet peeves. As far as the woman feeling intimidated by others fitness- that is sad. I am a middle aged, overweight, female instructor and I have never felt intimidated by any one at Golds or any other place. I wouldn't say Golds has any more hard bodies than any other gym.
We do have an awesome Group Ex program lead by highly trained staff.

I was a member there long before I decided to teach there so basically
Pros- lots of equipment, inexpensive member fees, Great Group Ex programs

Cons- people don't put their weights/ equipment away, it can get very crowded at peak times, and from the poster above- people can be put off by the fit people working out. 4951

Maybe I could save some bucks then.  I use the elliptical (but do have one at home) and weight machines.  Still a little intimidated by free weights by myself. Prefer late mornings or afternoon workouts. 4951

After my company opened up their gym, I cancelled Golds. The #1 complaint about Golds after going somewhere nicer for a year is the filth everywhere. Hardly anyone wipes off equipment and everywhere just looks dirty. I'm surprised I never got a staph infection there.#2 complaint is when something breaks, it is going to be broken for a while.#3 complaint is at peak times, it is very difficult to get a good workout in. You have tons of meatheads standing around talking about all the girls and then you have people with no gym etiquette that bring their big huge duffel bags and have all their personal equipment spilled out everywhere. 4951

It's been a while since I've been there. I thought it always seemed dirty and had lots of broken machines. I liked YMCA better by far. I'm about ready to start working out again. I think I'm going to hold out to join Orange Theory when it opens in the heb shopping center. 4951
