Good article in the Chronicle outdoor section on copperhead snakes feeding on cicadas as they emerge at night out on lawns with trees. Seems like this is a big year for them as I have noticed how loud they are as they fly up into the trees and I've seen a lot of cicada wasps out on the prowl.Watch where you walk if you go out at night! www.chron.com/sports /outdoors/article/Co pperhead-engage-in-n ightly-summerti 4951

Isn't there an old Charlie Pride song, "Oh, The Snakes Come Out At Night". The melody is in my head right now. 4951

My dog got bit by a Copperhead last Sunday night. It was 9:30 pm and I was with her outside. She just wandered into a mulch bed and came out unable to put her paw down.  I thought she twisted it but then with a few minutes it started to swell. I gave her 2 Benadryl. I could of given her 3 because she is 80 lbs. I know that now. For 3 hrs she laid on the couch panting with ice wrapped around her paw. If her vitals were off, I would of taken her to emergency, but she was coherent, had pink gums.....I didn't feel the need to take her temperature.  It just passed and the next day her whole entire leg was 3x the size of the other but she could walk on it. I was then able to see 4 pin prick bites. Like it bit her twice. Dogs can fend off these snakes better than us.   4951

Emergency does not have the anti venom. My friends 9 week old chi also got bit, and they wanted $3500 if they were able to get the anti venom. With antibiotics, Benadryl, IV, she did t need it.  4951

@Shane4Xmas: Same thing happened to my dog. It was having trouble breathing so we took it to ED. luckily he is fine now.

Do you know what the emergency vet did for the breathing?  I'm sure they shot yours up with Benadryl and antibiotic. Probably gave you tramadol for pain.   4951

One more thing I gave my dog........I ran to the market and bought a couple cans of sardines in oil and gave it to her. Seems dumb but a friend of mine told me that helps a lot. Fact that she ate it, told me she was ok. Ugh.  4951
