So excited!  My mom's wedding dress came in the mail yesterday.  We are Christening our little girl in October and I had asked my mom if I could have her wedding dress to make into a Christening gown for our daughter.  Luckily she had it preserved back in 1974 after her and my dad got married and it is in great shape (besides smelling like some kind of chemical/oldness).  I'll have to get it professionally cleaned once the Christening gown is completed, figured its not worth paying to clean the whole wedding dress if I am only going to take it apart.  I plan to make a practice gown first from regular lace from the fabric store so that I make sure I work out any kinks in the pattern before I go cutting up her wedding dress!  We are both so excited about it, she cried when I asked her if I could do this so I am really excited to make it and have her see it on my daughter come October.  I'll try to take some photos of the original wedding dress (I already removed a set of decorative buttons so I could see the seam lines, but I'll tack them back on) and then the Christening gown when I am done with it.  4951

I love this and can't wait to see pictures!I actually had a Christening outfit made out of my wedding gown. I bought a pattern that the seamstress could make one top, and a skirt bottom and a pants bottom - the top would Velcro into the bottom part, this way if I had boys and girls, they would all be able to wear it. I ended up with all boys, but have the outfit put away for the grandkids one day (I hope!). The rest of my cut-up dress is in the closet and I plan to have handkerchiefs made for the boys for their weddings. 4951

That is pretty cool. When we packed everything at my parent's house after they died my sister took our mother's wedding dress from 1946 and also our grandmother's from 1913! Finding a re-purpose it this way is a great way to pass them on since most young ladies want to choose their own dress when they marry. My sister never figured out what to do so they just sit in box. We have the christening gown from my dad from 1916 and most of the kids and grand kids either were christened in it or at least had their picture taken if christening wasn't the family's thing. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:

There are companies you can send them to and have "Angel gowns" made. An angel gown is given to parents who have lost an infant. They bury the child in these gowns. Many women donate their wedding dresses for this purpose. 4951
