helloI'm new to the neighborhood, well July was 2 yrs new. Its taking a long time to get settled in. I just found this site tho and thought I'd join and say hello.  Also does anyone know the type of trees that cause the canopy effect in the KW area?  They are so beautiful!!!  I think I'm going to try to get them planted in our neighborhood, we are pretty treeless for KW. 4951

Are you talking magnolia trees? Really lush green, big leaves? 4951

Probably Live Oaks, believe that is what is planted around Town Center on KWD. They stay evergreen with new leaves pushing out the older in the spring. 4951

Welcome and hello! You must be in a fairly new build and development. Live Oaks line West lake Houston by town center. Kingwood rocks! Where did you move from? 4951

Welcome! I hope you are enjoying life in Kingwood! And I agree, Live Oaks if you are referring to the trees on WLH at KW Dr. - I love how they cover WLH in that area. 4951

We got here three years ago as well. Love it here! The trails are lovely and I love the fact that every village has a park and pool with the trails leading to them. 4951

One warning on Live Oaks - Go drive around Rice University and see how beautiful the trees are. Then look down at the sidewalks. With age, roots really tear them up. At least, plant trees far from your slab, driveway, sidewalk and street.

Don't forget to call 811 before digging and they will mark all the utilities running through your yard.

Thanks so much for that warm welcome.  And YES...Live Oaks.  I should have known...lol...its too funny because that is the city my parents live in!!   LOL!   And thanks for the info on the roots of the live oaks, and the answer to my question.  The magnolias are pretty too  btw, but I have heard they are horrible to deal with when they shed.  And I did know the ones I'm talking about were definitely not magnolias. So welcome to those of you here that are also newbies.  Does anyone ever meet on this thing?  Are there any offline friendship connections?  I don't know anyone here other than people I am just now getting to know in my church.  All my family is in Florida. I moved here for a job that was temporary and they talked me into staying permanently...lol.  So I am off during the week usually, tho this week I'll be without wheels, the shop wants to babysit my SUV..hee hee.  But who likes coffee? 4951

@cmcclain: Are you serious? How can anyone not love coffee, especially with all of the great places around for it, both locally owned and national chain favorites?

Hi and welcome!

I love live oaks but they do create maintainence:

I trimmed my matures pretty much once a season to keep them off of the ground....as well as picking up all of those gumballs (seed pods). They are very pretty however when they are kept up.

To your latter there are forum meet ups posted as well as a group that meets at Zacharys Cajun on occasion. Although I have never attended the posts seem to indicate good times had by all...!

@cmcclain:  Hello and welcome to KDC!  This is a fun and informational forum.  We've been here 23 years and love it.  Back then, housing developers made an effort to save as many trees as feasible on lots and even planted some additional ones.  Over time, it just became more expedient (and profitable) to clear-cut new areas to be developed and then plant a couple of small trees when construction was done.  I love driving through some of the older villages where there are so many trees.

@TXtransplant: I have a tree that drops gumballs (more like land mines for bare feet) but it isn't a live oak.  Most I get is leaves in the spring.
