Summer comes along and we do a lot of grilling which I do like whether it's meat or seafood but I get a hankering about mid season for something slow cooked which is more what we eat in colder months. I had to stop into Randall's up front yesterday to grab a few things and noticed they had pork butts on sale for $1.79/lb but some were marked down by 50% as the 3rd was the sell by date. I usually find the cryovaced meat a pretty safe bet even when it approaches that date to sell as it's been vacuum sealed and as long as it's kept cold it should be fine if cooked promptly. I'm trying a Portugese style braised pork roast called Penil Assado, basically as slow cooked covered dish with plenty of paprika and cumin and vegetables tossed in towards the end. Could have been done in the crock post but I got a late start and the big Le Cruset cast iron pot will do the trick in a 300 degree oven. I'll let you all know how it turns out! 4951

@Andreweggplant: Oh come on, you don't have to eat the veggies but they do add flavor! And cumin is one of my personal favorite spices, goes in a lot of things I cook. Like I said, it was just something I saw when I ran into Randalls.

@Chrisinkingwood: Cummin is a great spice! I have been using it a lot lately to season my meats and it really adds a great flavor.

@Chrisinkingwood:
Well, maybe I would consider it as long as the veggies were not green or white... Happy that you can be creative with cooking... The house/kitchen probably smells good too... 4951

Ok, here is the review of my dinner. Turned out pretty good. The pork was really tender and most of the fat that we associate with a pork shoulder had rendered out. Nothing to brag about but it was just a good comfort food meal. Used up some left over veggies and made a big gratin type dish and some roasted potatoes. Tasted great with our everyday red wine that we mostly drink. 4951

I don't mind the cooking part but I would hate to do the dish clean up! 4951
