Some colleges tuition and boarding can easily be 20,000 to 50,000 a year. Unless you get scholarships , your parents have lots of money, or you go into debt heavily it is not affordable.   Are there any degrees that allow you to make good money besides Math and Science based degrees? Just venting and want your opinions. Please refrain from the vote for Hilary comments. Emoticon  Or is there a way to have a free districted college like elementary and high school that hasn't been thought of besides increasing property taxes?  4951

people can go to a community college for two years and then transfer into a 4 year school as a junior to finish up their bachelors. yes, you still pay fees for courses in a JC but far lower than in a four year school. this can save on the student loans which are running 9 percent interest (while banks pay 1 percent or under on deposits). no wonder student loans are an issue. 4951

State schools are on the lower end of that range, and you can go to community colleges for two years, then larger state schools for two.  Want to dance at Baylor or cheerlead at TCU, then it will certainly cost you a fortune, for no good reason.  And yes, a college degree can easily make the difference between working a lower paying job, and working one where you retire at 55 and spend the rest of your life happily traveling around this great country of ours.  Obviously other skills and determination factor in, but the degree gets you in the door, or is required for the job, in many cases.  There is no way to provide free college for everyone, without most of us paying more in some form of tax.  Also, there are not enough teachers professors, nor space at current schools to house the millions that would come because it was suddenly free.  4951

I joined the Coast Guard for 4 years. Had a great time serving my country and then was wonderfully paid back with free college, room and board etc. Best decision I've ever made. 4951

I got tuition assistance through my employer, and went at night, it was a grind but well worth it.  I think less employers are offering this benefit these days though.  4951

College Degrees[ : ] [Are] Is [they] it really worth the $$?

Yes, they are worth the money. You use them to get your foot in the door and build your career. You don't have to go to a top-tier school. Local, accredited community it's college with a transfer to a locally accredited university is all you need. You can always build on your education later, once you are working in your chosen field. 4951

Don't assume you HAVE to go to a big high-profile school to get a good job. You can get a great education at a "smaller" school like Sam Houston State, Texas State, (or sfa, I suppose...) for a lot less money.  4951

Yes, at this point college is worth the money.  If you go to a 2-year college and then a 4-year state college you will save lots of money.   4951

I see a lot of "college educated" individuals who lack knowledge. 4951

USMC taught me many life lessons. Taking time to prepare. Thinking ahead. Not freaking out. Remaining calm...it was a great experience. Still stay in good shape for my age, try to workout 3-5 days a week. 4951

@beastmodeDude, to this day, my husband is more proud of his Service in the Marines and SERE School Completion than he is of his Sam Houston State University Bachelors Degree...  4951

@herron1345: Likewise. Something about the Marine Corps. I tried to stay in the Reserves but had to get the Guard money for school. Those Guard Soldiers wanted me dead half the time. As an officer I would hold them accountable for physical fitness. After they got fit though they loved me! Go figure. Never had one person die or get in trouble my whole time deployed like almost every other unit clearing roads. Without implementing  Marine standards they would not have happened. They became a real family..black, white did not matter. They took care of each other.

1. Nothing is ever free.
2. You (meaning anyone) don't "deserve" or have a "right" to anything.
3. Not everyone is college material, and that's ok.
4. Don't ***** and complain about student loans. No one forced you to take them and it's no ones fault but your own if the degree path you chose sucks and pays diddily, again, your choice.
5. There are many many ways to help subsidize college; grants, scholarships, military, ect. If it's that important to you, figure it out.

That is all...carry on. 4951
