Interesting article on how fireflies are all but disappearing due to changes in habitat. I remember them as a kid back in the summertime when I was a kid growing up on Long Island and later when we moved to Atlanta, GA. I've lived in Houston since 1980 but can't really remember them here. Do you remember them?http://www.takepart.com/article/2016/07/07/firefly-populations-are-blinking-out?cmpid=tp-ptnr-huffpost 4951

We called them lightning bugs. Still around in rural areas, don't recall seeing them here in kingwood though. Probably are out on the water. 4951

I see them when I go up to Lake Livingston. Some years I only see a few and other years there are a whole bunch flitting around in the woods. 4951

@sh56: it makes sense that they wouldn't be in an area that's saturated with light, it kind of steals their thunder and makes breeding harder.

@BooBear: And I really don't ever remember seeing them around here in the first place so it's not so much that they have disappeared as maybe they were never really here in the first place. Like those darn love bugs. People come from other places and wonder what the heck they are. We have had them around long enough to know exactly what they are. Hopefully some day there will be a - where did the love bugs go - thread!

I've seen a few. There's not near the numbers that there are North of here, but even those numbers have dwindled over the past decade. Really the only thing that's changed is the timber mgmt practices and heavy chemical use over control burns. 4951

Here in the Houston area, where they spray during the late evening & thru the night for mosquitoes, I'm thinking they may be killing off other insects also.  They wouldn't be killing the daytime insects, but those that are predominately at night could be effected. ALL EXCEPT THOSE DAMNED MIDGES & NO-SEE-UMS & MOSQUITOES!!!! They thrive through everything!! 4951

I haven't seen one in over 10 years and that was back in NJ.  My DD went someplace with relatives once and came home all excited that the love bugs weren't stuck together and they were lighting up.  She thought they were the same.I remember as a kid catching them and putting them in a mason jar and watching them light.  Or we took the light off and wore it as earrings.  I know we killed them by doing it but I didn't know any better at the time and we thought it was fun.  4951

Love bugs haven't been as bad as in the past despite the wet years strung together. Used to have to pull over on 59 to clear holes in the windshield to actually see or get swarmed on Labor Day weekend putting in food plots. It seems they've been thin since Hurricane Rita. 4951
