I went to ShowBiz today to see a movie. Despite being a bit before the first showing, the lines were at a crawl. The holdup - assigned seating.

I could list about 5 specific gripes but will leave it as I hope this won't last long.

If so, My ticket and concessions money will keep going down the road to Movie Tavern.

@Annie, what do you mean assigned seating?  Like they randomly tell you where to sit once you get to your assigned theater or you pick a seat when you buy the ticket?  Either way pain in the ***.  I want the freedom to get up and move if someone near me is being annoying--playing on their cell phone, talking etc.  If they have strict assigned seating they will lose my business.  Guess I will have to see the secret lives of pets at AMC. 4951

I think it depends on the theater and movie you are going to... I am not saying it is not annoying as all get out if you aren't expecting it, but I totally would prefer that then getting a ticket and having to sit in the row with my head all leaned back. Now getting stuck next to someone on their phone (as a faithful millennial) I will say something. I have zero shame. If I can put my phone away for 2 hours so can you darn it.  4951

You must have went to the special theatre. I still don't understand what the purpose of assigned seating is. We used it when we went to see deadpol. It was weird 4951

I was seeing Dory but I heard the woman in line next to me selecting a seat for Tarzan.

The selection process was much like an airline - see available seats on a screen and select what you expect to be the lesser of the evils.

@yankeejessica:

I was in one of the smaller theaters - not the all bells and whistles one.

When I used to work at a cinema in England assigned seating was the norm for any showing that was expected to be busy, I actually prefer it because it gives you the opportunity to select a seat before you go to avoid disappointment.When we went to see The Force Awakens at Showbiz in the SDX auditorium it was unassigned and we left because we ended up right at the front, we complained to Showbiz who said they were working on it (which apparently they have) and gave us free tickets to go again but the only one at the time with guaranteed assigned seating was all the way in Baytown, but we did make the trip.They have since opened the one at Fall Creek which is also assigned seating and so the last few big movies we have seen have been there. Alamo Drafthouse which is our pick for smaller films also switched to fully assigned last year.As mentioned, generally it is better, although I suppose if you only ever buy at the box office it could be a pain. But I will say this, for a quiet showing after the lights go down you would be perfectly free to move seats if you aren't happy where you are.It does seem to me that if the 80's software that my former UK employer was using was able to switch from assigned to unassigned depending on need then the fact that these chains don't have that ability now is a little pathetic.I would also add that ShowBiz are particular bad at getting through lines, it seems the entire staff is what we would call "half-soaked" and has no sense of urgency, that was the cause of another complaint to management. I am 16 years older, much heavier and much less fit than when I did their job but I could still run rings around any of them!! 4951

I've always thought Showbiz should change the layout. I don't want to mess with my ticket when I'm holding a drink and popcorn. It's clumsy. 4951

Are you talking about "reserved" seating? We went to see Star Wars at the Edwards Marq'e, and Avengers and Finding Dory at Deerbrook Mall, both with reserved seating and never had an issue. I bought the tickets online, picked my seats, and done. Actually, I bought the Dory tickets while sitting at Saltgrass eating dinner. We got our snacks, walked right in, and sat in our reserved seats. MUCH better than having to get there early to scramble for a decent seat. 4951

It's mandatory? If i don't reserve, how do I know where to sit? 4951

The two places I've been, there's only one specific screen that has reserved seating. You buy the tickets knowing you have to pick your seats. It costs a little more but it soooo worth it. The Deerbrook one is NICE; wide recliner seats, actual wall partitions between rows so you don't get kicked from behind. I don't care for Deerbrook Mall but their reserved seating screen is my first choice. 4951

We saw a popular movie at Deerbrook over Christmas and chose the theater where you have reserved seats.  It was a very nice, comfortable theater.  It cost more, but this way we were insured good seats together.  I liked it.  4951

@lola: I will answer all of your questions here, they print it on your ticket when you buy it at the box office, they should show you the free seats and let you pick a location.As mentioned, I have been to Fall Creek, it's nice, has bowling and a bar, large arcade, better layout than Kingwood, SDX wasn't an afterthought, they have reserved seating too.The concessions before having your ticket taken is by far the most common layout, and usually even if there are screenside concession stands they don't bother opening them half the time, it is a pain messing with the tickets though!
