I don't see many in Kingwood, but they are in the hill country. I'm not sure what sort of ecosystem makes them happy. Said another way there are many more in the north. 4951

When we first moved to Houston over 40 years ago we saw them every summer. Now we do not see them any more, even here in Kingwood.  I was in East Texas last weekend and was so happy to seem them in the early evening and the early morning. 4951

@soxs mom:

Yep, either too much population or pesticide has pushed them out of the 'burbs. 4951

I've never seen them in Kingwood. I thought I heard years ago that the stuff that is sprayed by the county via the trucks to kill Mosquitos keeps the lightening bugs away but I don't know if that's true. 4951

They were everywhere when I was younger.  I read an article that said that chemical fertilizers and pesticides have contributed to their  disappearance, because the babies (larvae?) live underground for months and months before they hatch into bugs.We saw hundreds in son's neighborhood in north Austin last weekend. 4951

@sh56: The good times-running around trying to catch them in jars-kept us busy without video games or checking to see who texted you.

I've seen a few lightning bugs in Kingwood. Not many and only rarely (usually after a few drinks, so who knows). There's a bunch around Lake Livingston. We spent a weekend there last summer and I swear it looked like clouds of lightning bugs from dusk to very late at night. It was really cool.

I wonder if there's a connection to our city bug spraying and lightening bugs. Not that I'm complaining about killing mosquitos. 4951

Thanks everyone! I have so many fun memories running around with my brother and our neighborhood friends catching lighting bugs (in glass jars...with holes in the top of lid)... Feeling a little nostalgic! May have a make a little trip north or west to give my kiddos the experience ☺ 4951

I have never seen them in kingwood but near the lakes in Austin they are plentiful. Brings back memories of being outside running around trying to catch them little buggers. 4951
