a holly bush. I would like to get rid of the ones in my front and back yard and replace with something more tasteful and not pointy. I know they are a pain because the roots will send up new sprouts. Help. Emoticon  4951

I had holly bushes on the side of my house when we moved here.  I tied a rope around the bushes one by one and pulled them out with the truck and never had them try to come back.  I hate holly bushes! 4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA: Did you have sprinkler lines? That's my only concern though; however, I love this idea!

@Brat:   They were in a very small area between the house and driveway.  There are no sprinkler heads in that area.   If you have to dig them out, put on long leather gloves cut them down and then dig out the roots.

You have to shape them. If you trim them they actually can look really nice but if you don't they can get out of hand. I have one with a big fat spread but the trunk of it is small so it looks kinda neat. I trim it with a gas trimmer every 2-3 months. 4951

@beastmode: I'll get a picture of the one in the back yard when there is light. My Dad did shape it and I'm considering it to be a tree. The thing is about 12 feet tall.

Drill a couple of 3" deep holes down into the trunk. Fill up the holes with Round Up.  Once it's dead and brittle it will be easy to break off at the base.If you have a chainsaw, cut it off at the base now, drill the holes and fill with Round Up. The stump will die. 4951

@Brat: It's probably overkill, but the herbicides listed work.  Just a matter of not killing everything that's broad leaf. You're welcome.

@BratOur doggie is doing great! We can't imagine how life was without him! DD is having fun teaching him more tricks this summer...so far, Army crawl and playing dead...this week is high-five. We will have to leave him for the first time with Grandma for a week while we travel and I am worried that he'll think that we're never coming back for him. He frets at the window whenever I run errands for a couple of hours....a week is a long time. We're going to break him in with some short stays at first, then overnight with his girl, then over night without his girl so, hopefully, he will realize that we always come back for him. 4951
