They say the chip in the credit cards now are for security purposes. It seems like a hassle, but if this is true I guess it's OK.

Your thoughts, I'm always suspicious 4951

I have to say that since we got the chips and the stores started using them I haven't heard about all the stolen cards anymore.  My DH's card was hit I believe 3 times and mine once before we got the chips and they started using them.  It's supposed to have a code that cannot be copied so they can't steal them anymore.  Knock on wood I'm really glad we got them. 4951

In Canada and Europe they have had chips for a long time and they do not have near the problems with card number theft as they have in the US...   4951

So are all credit cards going to get the chip? I still have a card without a chip in it.

I remember hearing that all businesses had to get a chip reader by a certain date. Is that true? 4951

@friday1:

It should eliminate the low tech thefts. Waiter copying and giving out your number, reader in the gas pump, etc. I am thinking that is a bunch of it.
Hi tech is always going to be a problem. I didn't understand why the FBI was having a fit over the iPhone thing. If Apple put it together and could take it apart then so can somebody else - and that proved to be true. 4951

I work at a retail establishment and customers do not like it, as if the card was issued as a debit then you must know the pin#. A lot of people do not know the pin#. Then terminals ask for the pin when looking at the card it looks like it is issued as a CC, not debit. 4951

Government has been using it for a long time, probably 20 years now. It works. Some glitches and lag with the software right now but most of it is easy to patch. I think it's less for the consumer and more to protect companies like what happened to Target. Once the technology got cheap enough it made sense.  4951

The only times my card has been compromised is in Kingwood and because I watch my account I caught it. Stayed in Houston years with no problems 4951

I dont see the point gas pumps don't have chip readers, red box doesn't read them how about all your online purchases.  4951

@jpm: Red box apparently has a design that prevents or deters the skimmer from being used. I have not used a Red box in years but there are some blocks welded above and below the card reader from what I read. Gas pumps are taking some of the same measures but both Red box and pumps were getting skimmed pretty good. As for online, that is a lot more difficult. Skimming is a low grade form of CC theft. There are also cameras everywhere now so it's getting harder to pull it off than say 5-10 years ago.

All I know is the chip takes longer which makes me have to have stupid inane conversations with the service people while waiting an eternity for it to process. That annoys me but I do like that I haven't had to get a new card this year except for when my son threw mine away by accident. 4951
