Just curious, and I am not trying to start a debate here...its a simple question. Why are we allowed to buy machine guns? What is the purpose? They are not used in hunting right? And it's clearly over the top if you are trying to protect yourself and family, well...to me. So if the reason guns are legal is to hunt or protect then why are we allowed to buy machine guns? Help a girl out...because I'm really simply questioning this. Thanks! 4951

@FeelinMinnesota: You can't buy a machine gun, in the traditional definition (think military issue, fully automatic).  You can buy what is called semi-automatic, meaning one bullet fires for each pull of the trigger, and they are available in handguns and rifles.  I hunt with an AR-15, which is a military-looking (but not functioning) semi-automatic rifle, and do so because I primarily hunt hogs, which often take more than one shot to kill.  It is also lighter weight than most deer rifles, and just as accurate, I find, so I think it is a superior hunting rifle. Some people do buy them for self defense, but most self defense weapons would be handguns.Hope this helps explain the difference between what a normal person can buy, and a military issued "machine gun".

Not true. It IS legal to own a machine gun with the required fed paperwork. Guns made after 1986 are no longer allowed. It has never beeb illegal to own one. 4951

Own a business and have a gang of 10 break in....you would wish you had one.

Government take over and your trying to prevent your family from being hauled off to camps.

Get lost in woods and have a pack of wolves find you.

Break down in bad area and a gang of 12 eyeballing your daughter?

Obviously in everyday life and in most break ins you would not need one but that one time you may. You should have that right.

If government doesnt want me to have one....I want 10.

Why are we allowed to buy machine guns?

I think the question should be is Why are they allowed to sell a type of gun that really has no purpose such as hunting etc....?

@Ray: I assumed the question was about buying guns currently.  You are correct that it is possible to have a grandfathered fully automatic weapon that was made before 1986, with the proper paperwork.  But in terms of a citizen buying a gun today that is fully automatic, it is not legal.

I look at it as. ..it's my right to own a fire arm! Once the federal government gains control and bans 1 or 2 types of weapons, nothing will stop them from adding other types of weapons (not just guns)! The idiots is DC love to sneak changes in, riding on & buried deep in a very important bill. But first they need a law passed, which will happen this coming week. Eventually it will become illegal to own any weapon that the government feels you don't need!

The man who did the killings in Orlando legally bought his weapons. He did not have a criminal record and currently it is not illegal to sell to someone on the watch list (thanks republicans), so he bought his weapons legally. Had he not had the guns he easily could have strapped on a homemade bomb. If someone is intent on killing a group of people (doesn't matter if related to sexual orientation, race, work disagreement...whatever the mental problem of the killer), if they are intent on killing they will kill!

I am uncomfortable with our federal government banning any weapon because they do not know when to stop! 4951

But, there is nothing to prevent someone from converting a semi to a fully automatic.

I am a life long gun owner. Automatic weapons for hunting, BS, automatic weapons are for killing people, same as a small .38, your not going to hunt with that, its made for killing.BUT, because one of the founding principles of this country is the right to bear arms, if you are legally eligible to buy a gun, just like picking out a new shirt, you have a right to choose, period.  4951

@TexasOma: There is nothing to physically keep someone from buying parts to do so, but it is illegal to do so.  They don't joke around about this; it is a serious crime.

@Steven H: It is illegal to buy a fully automatic weapon, and as you state, they would not be good for hunting anyway.  I prefer my semi-automatic rifle over bolt action, and it is an excellent hunting rifle.  The OP asked what a "machine gun" was used for, and you can't legally buy a "machine gun".

@FeelinMinnesota: What are you calling a machine gun?   If you are refering to an AR15 as a machine gun, then yes, they are used for hunting.  AR's are awesome for killing hogs as well as being a cool target shooting rifle.  AR10's which are the same platform except larger caliber are great deer rifles.

Thanks for the clarification...I had no idea. And I guess my terminology was incorrect. So, let me get this straight. Each pull only ejects 1 bullet...correct? My thought was a machine gun basically sprays bullets...I know I sound uneducated but I am when it comes to guns. I was not raised around them and only recently shot my first one. Thanks. 4951
