Since Albertson't take over I've noticed some changes at Randalls. I tend to shop mostly at HEB but sometimes hit the Randalls if I am driving in up front, sometimes at the back. Recently they took out the track lighting that I felt was warm and inviting and installed lots of very bright fluorescent lights.  I actually have pretty sensitive eyes and I almost want to wear sunglasses in the store now. I just think it looks cheaper and makes the decor such as the walls and signage of the store look old. They also seem to be spraying all kinds of vegetables with water that don't need it and they look moldy. Green beans, Brussels sprouts, even eggplant don't benefit from being soaked in water. My son used to work there and said a few of the guys he stayed in touch with have all left. They said Albertson's was offering less benefits and increased workloads. Can't wait for the new HEB to open! 4951

I love Randalls because it's never busy, but that is why I won't shop at Target, 24 lines and 1 open.
I'm in there daily and I don't think I've noticed a difference in lighting but I don't usually pay attention. 4951

That's a shame. Randall's used to be a pleasant place to shop. A bit pricy, but they have things I can't find anywhere else.  Ditto on the new H.E.B., I can't wait! 4951

When did Albertsons buy Randalls. I thought Safeway owned them.

I never shop there because they are sooooo expensive! I prefer HEB then Kroger. There are some things that I get at Walmart but if I can buy it elsewhere, that's all the better! 4951

@TexasOma: Safeway I believe owns Albertsons. There was some chatter about them changing the names of Albertsons and Randals but have not heard anything in a while.

I've never liked Randalls. Don't like the look of their store, the feel of it..and their prices are too high. 4951

I've been hitting up the Randall's at Kingwood/WLH on Fridays bc of their $5 Friday deals (about 1-2x a month I can get their deli made cheese pizza, which is HUGE, for $5 - then we just doctor it up with pepperoni, etc.). They just had the Hormel seasoned porkloins on sale for $5 a couple of weeks ago (Kroger charges at least $8.99 for them - or jack them up to $12.99 when they do BOGO) - so I stocked up on those.

I also check out their discounted meats and can get some great deals (BOGO or 30-50% off). I have the Safeway app on my phone and can easily add e-coupons to my card as I shop and I will frequently get a $5 off $50 coupon to add to my card as well.

I walked out of the store a few weeks ago with about 8 packages of meat, and other grocery/produce/detergent items for around $83 (full price would have been over $150). So, you just have to shop the deals!

So that's why the cheap icky meat. Noticed brand changes and now must find another source.
Years ago in Arizona they really boned employees with low wages, cut benefits and demanded the work overtime with no pay differential.
I would only shop their sales and never meat and veggies. When they did that to employees we quit shopping all together.
We will do the same here. They are over priced anyway. 4951

@beastmode: Actually Albertson's parent company, Cerberus Capital Management purchased Safeway Brands who was the parent company of Randalls. Their hope is to be bigger than Kroger. Bigger doesn't always equate to better.

Cerberus Capital Management

@Chrisinkingwood: Interesting company with fingers in many pies. They also own among others Freedom Group (Bushmaster, Remington, Marlin Arms), Dynacorp (Private military contractor), AT&T Advertising Solutions and AT&T Interactive, and at one time acquired Chrysler Motors but sold it to Fiat.

@Chrisinkingwood: I suspect it will be another corporate raid. Too hard creating something like Kroger if you want to make a fast buck. Easier to cut costs and dump it on another raider management firm. Agree though, it might be bigger but like Walmart, bigger does not mean better. I shop at Randalls a lot due to convenience and a lot of welfare recipients from my observation.

We had to stop shopping at Randalls when we kept finding outdated items on shelf and food spoiling very quickly after we purchased it. Lead us to believe the refrigeration & handling of cold & frozen products was not up to par.Looking forward to the new HEB also! 4951

I have had to return out of date items as well. I had bought country ribs and made a wonderful marinade for them. I put 2 or 3 ribs in the marinade and rib #4 was black and green on the underneath side EWWWWW. I put them all back in the package and returned them. The customer service clerk remarked about how good they smelled but when I showed her the color she just shrugged and said "Maybe that's why they were on sale."When I think of that story, I'm kicking myself for not asking for more than my money back. That yummy marinade had a lot of ingredients in it and all the chopping etc.  Oh well.. 4951
