Does the Kingwood High Schools (K-park or Kingwood) require graduating seniors to do any sort of community service hours or anything like that, in addition to their normal academic classes, in order to graduate? 4951

Do any schools actually require it as part of the curriculum?  Seems like it might be getting into some legal grey areas to force kids to volunteer.My daughter's school district has a Distinguished Service Graduate designation, which she is on track to receive.  It will be on her transcripts and her diploma.  Not sure how much colleges will care, but I like the program and I like that they have gotten DD to  get involved.I want my daughter to want to volunteer, but I don't want her forced to do it.   4951

Only members of Nation Honor Society or some other orgs.  As for graduation requirements, no.  My DD college does Emoticon  and their volunteer work is fun, she loves it.  The school gives out Tshirts and loads them up and takes them to community events to promote the school and the community service projects.  4951

@J2911: I actually thought about that and almost qualified my statement to state public school curriculum.

Some of you are wrong. Porter high school does/doesn't it's all up to the student. If you complete 100 volunteer hours every year from freshman to senior you get a special cord at graduation showing that you did it...my oldest will be a freshman and we are currently working on it. I have a friend who works for the Montgomery food bank so we are working closely with her to get his hours in along side the Houston food bank and buffalo bayou project! 4951

@yankeejessica:

Sounds like the same thing as my DDs school. I'm very proud of her. I really think this experience will encourage her to continue to volunteer. It's been very positive.

Thanks everyone for your input. wasn't sure if that was a thing down here. Actually surprised it's not. When I graduated from a NY HS we had to do hours for national honors society as well as a civics class. Good to know, that's very helpful! 4951

I think the only required volunteer hours are for different organizations. I know we needed so many hours in order to stay in National Honor Society and Student Council. At least that's how it was for me back in 2007. Then again I also went to MacArthur, not a Kingwood school, and they were just happy if you graduated and didn't wind up in prison. Kinda sets the bar low lol. 4951

@allymansfield:

NHS requires it no matter which district, so NHS kids here would have to. I never actually took a civics class so not sure on that one.

Every extracurricular club or team my kids were on required it as well.  That's not a specific respond to this district, but I'm betting it's similar.  4951
