Anyone know why steroids are being prescribed with throat illness (not sure viral or not)?
Seems weird as I thought they supressed the immune system -- at the same time you need the immune system more. I'm guessing it's to reduce inflammation, but just can't find it used for infections -- usually arthritis, etc.
They also make it hard to sleep, when sleep would help the healing process.
Just wondering if anyone has an opinion or experience. 4951

I suspect you are actually talking about corticosteriods and not anabolic steroids.  Corticosteriods have shown some effectiveness in relieving pain from inflamation.  Corticosteriods only work on inflammation, not infections.  Some people have throat pain from inflamation but do not have an active infection.  Those people may benefit from corticosteriods. 4951

These are the pills -- with one fewer each day. The fever's gone (102) and headache better, throat isn't white or bright red anymore, but still hurts. The doc never mentioned the steroids, then they were part of the prescription @ the pharmacy. It's been three days thus far. Probably too late to start the steroids now....
We usually err on side of less medication -- but hate when it's really an error!
Thanks for the input. 4951

@Max57: That is Prednisone (or generic equivalent). Even short term, you need to be weened off of it. Not dangerous, plus very effective, as long as you follow the directions and take it properly.

From WebMD: Steroids (short for corticosteroids) are synthetic drugs that closely resemble cortisol, a hormone that your body produces naturally. Steroids work by decreasing inflammation and reducing the activity of the immune system. They are used to treat a variety of inflammatory diseases and conditions.

Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids, which some athletes use to build bigger muscles. Examples of corticosteroid medications include triamcinolone, cortisone, prednisone, and methylprednisolone. 4951
