The side streets along Hamblen are being seal-coated and I'm guessing that eventually they will seal-coat the length of Hamblen. BUT......there is a problem at the NE corner of Hamblen & Forest Cove, it's been a problem for years. The corner keeps sinking and the city keeps putting asphalt into the sink hole, only to have it sink again. Last week part of the pavement broke through and someone stuck an orange traffic cone into the hole. When you drive past the intersection, you have to swerve into the east-bournd traffic to avoid your tires dipping into the sunken area. Finally I got tired of it and called Councilman Martin's office and told them that if they were going to seal coat the length of Hamblen, they best send an engineer to assess the situation and to replace the culvert that has broken. I told them also that if it doesn't get fixed right, eventually Forest Cove will be on the news for having a car fall into a sink hole, instead of the usual flooding trips that the media make here. Didn't think anything would come of it, but to my surprise, this morning there was an 'important looking person' looking the area over and was marking the area off with pink spray paint. I stopped and asked the guy if they were going to replace the culvert that broken & his replay was "there's a culvert here?"That was about noon when I spoke with him. When I came back around 3:30, they had a backhoe digging up the intersection and a big crew of people. Then, when we left to eat supper, they were filling in the hole & mixing in lime to stabilize the soil. When we came home from supper at 6:30, the crew & backhoe was gone, the hole filled in and police car sitting there protecting the new work until it set up. I'm hoping my call to Councilman Martin's office did some good for all of us who live to the east of Forest Cove Dr..  If anyone else placed a call also, thank you. Sometimes calling the person who represents your area really does work. I was skeptical, but this time it worked. 4951

Why not call the mayor too? This could be an accident waiting to happen. 4951

I've been pleasantly surprised by recent responses from COH in the Forest Cove Area.
I've called them on a few things recently and each time, they respond within a day or two.
I don't know if it's Dave Marten, the new mayor or what, but it really has been good to see. 4951

@bubbleyes72: It's fixed!!! At least I think it is! We'll see in a few weeks if & when it starts sinking again.  My hubby was with me when we passed them mixing the lime into the soil. I had already seen the backhoe in action and how deep they dug & told him about that.  He is a Civil Engineer & use to work for the Highway Dept. before retiring. So from my description & from what he saw with the lime mixing, he's thinking they got their act together.  He thinks my cautioning threat of the media coming to report on cars falling into a sink hole was probably enough for the councilman to get interested & involved.  It was only yesterday afternoon that I placed my call & they were out there EARLY today.  I've reported it to 311 several times and that only brought filling in with more asphalt.

Same here.  This is the first time I've called Dave Martin's office, but my recent 311 calls - regarding the yard destruction/reconstruction by PUCC & lining the sewer pipe -- have had a response of some sort the very next day.  4951

@TexasOma: That's one of the things I'm referring to.
Last week, I had a question about verification of my drains after they installed the new liner and a manhole in my yard.
Within minutes a supervisor was in my back yard and tested each drain from my home with dye.
A few minutes after that, the manager (who I called in the first place) was on the phone confirming they had answered my questions to my satisfaction.
Really a change to what I saw a few months ago when they started.
Thanks to whoever at COH.

How can they fix it that deep with all the rain? Our land is very soft, sandy soil.  Just seems odd it can be "fixed" that easily with all this weather and strong rain.  Sure hope it holds this time. 4951

Didn't the mayor campaign on the idea of 311 actually doing their job? For awhile there you would call them, they would come out look at it, put up a cone or something then leave it for months(and that is for a simple pot hole or curb falling apart) 4951

@Txbutterfly:

When they were working on it yesterday the deluge had not started. They dug out the damaged culvert pipe and repaired the problem. They mixed lime into the soil as they put it back into the hole then topped it with asphalt. Once it set up (before the rains hit) it should be good as new.

Hubby and I just drove over the repair and it seems fine. It's not perfect, but it's 100% better than before. Time will tell if it lasts. If it doesn't, I'll be calling Dave Martin's office again! I'm just thankful they did something!
