I've been traveling and staying in hotels or motels as they used to call the roadside ones since I was a kid in the late 50's. We are in a brand new Courtyard by Marriott and I just made another cup of coffee and thought of how far hotels have come for traveler's convenience. Now we expect and usually get coffee and sometimes tea made in our rooms. Many have small refrigerators and microwaves. Big flat screen TVs are the norm and I can remember when Motel 6 had a coin slot and you paid extra to watch. Internet is a must, sometimes you pay and other times not. My DW is Platinum with Marriott so the extra fast internet is free. An alarm clock, hairdryer, iron and ironing board are all standard now. Some places leave you a newspaper in the morning, some offer free breakfast. The Courtyard chain is a bit less business friendly, this one only has coffee in the lobby when the Starbucks on sight isn't open. This one also has a small food service and no free breakfast. Still it's a nice place and has a big outdoor pool. But one thing the new hotels don't have..... The Magic Fingers coin operated vibrating bed! 4951
After watching the news stories of the maid cleaning the toilet and glasses with the same rag, I never use the in-room coffee makers. I can walk downstairs. 4951
I get irate now when I actually stay in a nicer hotel and they charge for WIFI.It's such a given at mid market chains. On the glasses issue, I only use disposable individually wrapped cups. Â Think of it like this, you see the maid service with clean glasses on the trolley, ever seen any dirty ones on there? Â Never looks to me like the dirty glasses are leaving the room.Plus I have noticed lipstick on them before. Â I've noticed lipstick and other make up on the covers as well. 4951
I check for bedbugs & only use plastic cups not the glasses my family makes fun of me bc I check all around bed underneath it. The comforter never gets washed so I throw it off. We stayed in a nice new Marriott this past weekend in San Antonio the toilet had Stains all around Like it had never been cleaned. This was a very new hotel. Other than that it was fine. 4951
Chris.....can even go back a bit farther than "motel"......how about "Courts".....i.e., the Reo Courts.....I remember staying in them sometimes with my family.....there was usually a little carport right next to where the entrance to your room was......soooo cute and cozy.......back in the day......brings up a very sweet visual in my head...... 4951
