Has anyone had pocket doors installed in their home? Who did you use, and how much did the door cost? 4951

What is a pocket door?

@Andreweggplant: Doors that open and close by sliding them in and out from the door frame, instead of a door that swings open and shut. My sister has them in her house in Florida, but I can never figure out how to get them to lock properly so when I am in the bathroom I just hope I can get the few minutes I need before one of the kids come barging in!

@prettybluehue: Man I wish I could remember his name, just a Handyman.
Cost depends on the door type (we had an Oak panel door, so it was like $200 for just the door) and accessibility to the wall to rebuild it.I think it ran about $450 at the time, but the cost of the door we wanted was about half of it. 4951

@lisapisabobisa: If you are starting from scratch I could see it easily costing that much.  You have to rip out the section of wall, reframe, install door, install trim, re-sheetrock, paint etc.  They are handy for tight spaces, though.

I had a pocket door installed by clera window www.clerawindows.com / a few years back. A pocket saves space and can be used in small half bath that does not have enough space for an in-swinging door They can also be used in spaces where a normal door would swing but would be in the way if opened. This situation is commonly seen in bathrooms and closets. Pocket doors can look very elegant in living rooms, dining rooms and libraries. 4951

@ET:  And, if on a load-bearing wall, a support wall to hold it in place while the framing is changed out. And, if there is room for the door in the wall next to it.
