There were several very obvious lies in the book, and I don't get it. The man had a Silver Star, what on earth could he possibly have left to prove?  4951

Why does everyone worship people in the military. People act like they are superheros and we need to congratulate them all the time. And give them special treatment and discounts.

I'm not saying they don't deserve any recognition but it seems lately it has been way over the top.

I can understand giving vets that were drafted into the military this treatment. They didn't have a choice. They were forced to join.

Everyone in the military today chose to be there. No one forced them. It is their job.

Sorry for the rant.

Actually some of them were forced. Sometimes a judge will order someone in the military to help them clean up their act. The draft could be re-instated at anytime as well but we have enough volunteers which is a great thing. As for them getting discounts that is also a voluntary thing. It's a tribute for their willingness to volunteer and make that sacrifice so other do not have to do it. It's not fun leaving your civilian job to go fight wars and restore order during natural disasters either. Kinda sucks. What really sucks though is trying to get hired when someone sees you are in the reserves. They know they will likely lose you at some point so they go with someone else since it's too much hassle to deal with. At one point the reserves had a 30+% unemployment rate so yeah, they deserve the discounts IMO.  4951

@Jeff1928:
Personally, i thank ever vet or military service member i come across because MOST volunteer to lay down their lives so that I can live FREE. There are not many jobs that can say that.

Jeff:

It IS their job. A job most citizens don't want, won't take and aren't brave enough to do. These people, quite possibly, are asked to leave their families and fight an enemy trying to kill them, all in a foeign country. Most of the time they have little food, poor water, poor quarters and a hole-in-the ground as a bathroom.

Yes, they chose the military. But I have yet to see anyone treat a military person as a superhero. Most people, not the liberals though, treat the service men and women with respect...a trait lost in the last few generations.

You tell me, Jeff, who is treated as a superhero. My nephew or Kim Kardashian? My daughter or Peyton Manning? Two of those people are willing to die for the other two. And you're ranting about military being treated differently?

Really?

You, sir, are a sad American.

@Jeff1928:  The same reason cops, firefighters, and teachers get extra respect. Public service. When the sh-t hits the fan, who you gonna want on your side? A reality star? There ain't no reset button in war, and lots of these boys, and I mean boys, lose friends in the most horrible way. They earned the respect we give them by ensuring our freedom. Every day.

If you worked around special forces guys they never talk about their missions you knew they were bad ***es by the way they handle themselves.

@friday1: My younger brother did 18 of his 22 years with the USASOC out of Ft Bragg.  For about a dozen of those years he was an operator with the 1st SFOD-D.  He spent a lot of time in central America, was part of the Mogadishu thing that turned into the book and movie 'Blackhawk Down', and did rotation after rotation into the Middle East.  He doesn't "not" talk about it, but it's not something he'll bring up in conversation and if asked, he'll just say he was with "group".  BBE does a Veteran's Day wall each year with a little ceremony for those of us that served (21 years Army for me).  I asked my brother for his lettuce a few years back and the cat has a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars, two with Valor.  That's some crazy *** hero-type stuff and you'd have zero clue this average size, average build, quiet and unassuming dude had it in him.  4951

@HollyHobby: Those would not be on his official record so that makes sense and it's not uncommon for Seals and Special Forces to receive them with no citation since it's classified. Probably only a few people even know about it. I don't think they can keep the medal either. Believe it is presented in private and taken back. Then they go back to work.

@beastmode: Although I agree 100% with your overall comment, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that this part is no longer applicable.  At one point, this did happen all of the time but at least as far back as 1990 it is no longer allowed.  The Army, Air Force, Marine Corp, and Coast Guard all have written regulations against accepting recruits in such circumstances and although last I knew the Navy didn't have a written regulation forbidding it, they considered it a disqualifier as well.  I'm not saying a judge can't sit upon an intimidating seat and threaten it...just saying it's not something they can enforce.

Maybe force is the wrong word, more "encourage" them to do so for a lighter sentence or get it thrown out. I knew a Soldier back in 2007ish that was given the option of going on probation or joining the Reserves. He chose the Reserves and said it was the best thing he ever did. The draft though never really went away. It's always an option but they have used other methods like the GI Bill and bonuses to keep it on the back burner.   4951
