Dear Humble ISD Community, Last night, we had the privilege of introducing Dr. Elizabeth Fagen as the Finalist for Humble ISD Superintendent. We want to share additional information about the process the School Board and Search Firm used to thoroughly vet and get to know Dr. Fagen. Our nationwide search for the next superintendent involved the following steps: Our School Board partnered with Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, a superintendent search firm that has led more than 1,000 searches in 38 states, to attract and identify the most qualified candidates. The search firm conducted an extensive background check on every candidate recommended to the Board for consideration. From 43 applicants, seven were selected for Round One interviews. Round One interviews consisted of a two-hour session with each of the seven candidates as well as individual research conducted by our school board. In addition, each Board member individually researched the candidates using information provided by the search firm and public sources. Three finalists were invited back to participate in Round Two interviews, which involved a three-day process and 12 hours of discussion with each candidate. Dr. Fagen was identified as the potential lone finalist. Three Humble ISD School Board members then conducted a site visit to the Douglas County School District where they met with principals, teachers, district administrators, school board members, business and community members. Four Humble ISD School Board members also made phone calls to three references each. Based upon all of the extensive research and process above, our School Board was well informed on all aspects related to Dr. Fagen’s candidacy. We are aware of the posts from Colorado on our district’s social media page last night and today. We have reviewed the posts, and we want you to know that none of the comments posted were a surprise to us, as we have done extensive research on all seven of our superintendent candidates, including Dr. Liz Fagen. We care deeply about this community and take our responsibilities to replace a wonderful leader like Dr. Sconzo very seriously.  Finally, as you know, it is the role of all school boards to represent their communities’ interests and needs well – to set policies, hire and supervise a superintendent. Therefore, we respect the right of the Douglas County Board of Education to pursue and implement policies that they feel are in the best interest of their staff and students. That said, we want to clear up any perception that our selection of Dr. Fagen implies that we are aligned or interested in the policies that the Douglas County Board has chosen to pursue. On the contrary, we are excited to have Dr. Fagen use her skills and talents as a former high school science teacher, high school principal, and superintendent to continue to lead the work in our district; the work we have set forth. She is equally excited to engage in this partnership and to collaborate with Dr. Sconzo to continue the path of our excellent district. Context is key and it is why local control is important. The vision of our School Board is to continue the culture and climate we all enjoy as part of the Humble ISD Family, and we could not be more excited about partnering with Dr. Fagen. Sincerely, Robert SittonPresident Keith LapezeVice President Angela ConradSecretary Heath RushingParliamentarian Charles CunninghamTrustee Brent M. If you are aware of her background and have received ALL the posts, how does she make it as a "Finalist"? 4951

@ntcoovert: The internet is a powerful tool.  One person can post multiple times as different people.  Having worked in both public and private education, I have seen some crazy parents who will go to extreme lengths to try and "ruin" someone who they feel wronged them.  I have also seen teachers unions (in NY) do some pretty crazy things to those who try to go up against them.  I am sure the district has put a little bit of effort into finding a person.  If, as a community, we don't feel that is the case and they are willy-nilly hiring people, perhaps we should not be focusing on the new woman but on our board instead.  I just find it sad that so many people have jumped on the band-wagon to trash this woman based on a few internet stories.

@ctl74: Not sure, but most places they are.  Teachers unions across the country are very very strong.

Comments made by people online aren't going to be considered.  There is no way of knowing who these people are, so what they think and say is not relevant.What is relevant, is the results she gets in the current school system she is running.  I do not know her or anything about her, but I do see her results are outstanding.  She is by no means besties with the teachers unions.  Good or bad, again I do not know.  But the results that are coming in while she has been in charge, are again, outstanding.

@Fallon:

Her results actually are not all great. Her graduation rate has gone up but the overall scores for tests have all gone down. Plus there's extremely high teacher / administration turn over. 4951

Someone on fb posted a link that I can't find right now where you could go into the individual schools in her district, not just the overall district, and look at the results for the CO state tests. They all went down. The ACT/ SAT scores went up as well as the graduation numbers. But that district is having to pay the state 4.5 million for not having the high schoolers in class for the required hours. That district was also found to be violating laws because one of those articles that's being passed around about the district being one of the most interesting in the country, was actually paid propaganda by the school district.

@allymansfield: Exactly!!!! A few so-called concerned Colorado parents just happened upon the Kingwood Observer Facebook page. Kingwood isn't "Humble" -- so someone must have done some serious research in order to figure out that Kingwood schools are within the Humble ISD. Trolls, the lot of them. This superintendent did what she was hired to do, education reform and the unionists despise her for it. It's not enough for these types to just disagree. No, they have to completely ruin her, and why?? Really, why?? Why are they trying to keep her from being hired here? Follow the money, but this level of vitriol is really, really strange.

@Fallon:
Exactly right. Very successful and not catering to the teachers unions. Thank goodness someone recognizes these comments aren't reliable evidence.

Yes, these attacked strike me as highly suspicious. These tactics are used by high powered interest groups and unions, from what I hear.

Maybe the turnover rate was high because she held the teachers to a higher standard and the teachers couldn't or wouldn't rise to the challenge 4951
