Humble ISD Chooses New Superintendent The Humble ISD Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Elizabeth Celania-Fagen as Lone Finalist for Humble ISD Superintendent. Dr. Fagen brings 20 years of experience in education, including eight as a superintendent leading large school districts. She currently is superintendent of the 67,000-student Douglas County School District in Colorado. She also served as superintendent of the 56,000-student Tucson Unified School District in Arizona. “We are excited about getting the best education mind in the country,” Humble ISD School Board President Robert Sitton said. “It’s powerful what she is going to be able to do. When people talk about education, we want them to say, you really need to go see what Humble ISD is doing. She is, in our opinion, the leader to take us there.” Dr. Fagen earned her doctoral and master’s degrees and her education specialist degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and her bachelor’s degree from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She examined teacher standards, teacher quality and teacher effectiveness for her dissertation. Her experience also includes being a central office administrator over high schools, a high school principal, a biology and chemistry teacher, and a tennis coach in Iowa. "I am honored that I have the opportunity to follow an excellent leader and wonderful person like Dr. Guy Sconzo -- to lead Humble ISD forward in the best interest of its students, staff, and community,” Dr. Fagen said. “I know I have big shoes to fill, and together, Dr. Sconzo and I are committed to providing the best transition in education.” The Humble ISD School Board began a national search in January for a new superintendent due to the upcoming retirement of Dr. Sconzo. Humble ISD’s opening for superintendent attracted 43 applicants from 14 states. Seven were selected for initial interviews. Three candidates who participated in initial interviews were invited back for second round interviews. “My family and I are excited to become members of the Humble ISD community,” Dr. Fagen said. “As an educator, leader, and parent, I am delighted to have this opportunity. I want to thank the Humble ISD Board of Trustees for selecting me to be part of their Team of Eight. I have enjoyed getting to know each one of them throughout this very thoughtful process, and I am grateful to be the Lone Finalist." Dr. Fagen understands fast-growth, high achieving school districts. Douglas County School District, a suburban district between Denver and Colorado Springs, grew 8,000 students in the last six years. This is comparable to the growth being experienced in Humble ISD. Douglas County is among the highest achieving school districts in Colorado, and has the highest median income in any Colorado county. Humble ISD was named the best large district in Texas in the 2015 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. "The Board has worked very diligently to find our next Superintendent of Schools,” Dr. Sconzo said. “She is a true leader for learning, and it is only and always about the children for her! I'm thrilled they have found someone with a successful track record leading large, complex school districts. I know Dr. Fagen will be a significant asset to our schools and community." A formal motion to appoint Dr. Fagen is anticipated to occur at the June 14 School Board meeting. Dr. Fagen will begin work in Humble ISD in July, with the specific date to be determined later. Dr. Guy Sconzo, superintendent since 2001, will remain as a consultant to the new superintendent and board through December 31. https://www.facebook.com/HumbleISD/?fref=ts 4951

Seeing a lot of controversy on FB, however, I have not read any concrete wrong doings. This might be a good thing. 4951

I am concerned about what I've read about her tract record in Co. and Az.  Anyone who has children in HISD should research her performance. 4951

It's just like a presidential election.  Half the people think the world is going to end with so and so as the leader.  They've thought that for the last 25 presidential elections, and have been wrong every time.  She may be good, or she may not be so good.  In the end, she's the figure head of a large public organization and will be evaluated by the board based on the district's performance.  If she stinks, she'll be replaced.  4951

I'm concerned too, but The Boy only has 2 years left in HISD, so it won't be our issue much longer. 4951

@donnatella:

You own a house or have property in this district? Bad school districts dont usually have waiting lines on area homes like we do. So yes it effects everyone.

She is pro-voucher and pro-parental choice for their children, yes this has caused the union and union teachers not to like her and they are very vocal about it.The results of the school systems she has led speaks for itself.Cash surplus, raised scores, growing systems, etc.Yup, that makes the unioned teachers upset because she is all about choice and not allowing tenure.

@Stealth83:

I would like to see data from her past school districts that she left them with a cash surplus and higher district scores.

Vouchers Im ok with as long as it doesnt take away from kids in public school. Parental education rights are state passed not district passed.

Yeah, kind of sounds like sour grapes from teacher unions.  People should see how she leads before they jump to uninformed conclusions 4951

1) She comes from an area where scores rank significantly higher on national report than Kingwood schools currently rank so she may be able to contribute in a positive manner to expect more out of the system and the teachers.

2) Maybe she will fix some of the laziness of using the likes of teachers using Class Dojo and other issues of bad written email communication between teachers and parents. It's very hard to understand how a teacher can write in a manner that is difficult to comprehend yet they are responsible to instill a level of teaching that should be applauded.

3) Maybe she can help add some more Early release days on maybe a Tuesday instead of Friday, that way we can all take off work in the middle of the week , 12 times a school year.

Education experience from the North isn't a bad thing.

Unionist trolls are working against this appointment in a big way. People claiming to be "concerned" citizens of Colorado somehow found their way to the tiny Facebook page of the Kingwood Observer (with a whopping 4,669 followers) and are trolling hard with links to a change.org petition and links claiming Dr. Fagen is the spawn of satan.On the other hand, former Secretary of Education, William Bennett, thinks the reforms Dr. Fagen brought were just fine: https://www.billbennett.com/wp-content/uploads/Bennett_DCSD_WhitePaper2.pdfAs soon as I saw the trolling, I took a second look at the whole thing. It seems that these people have a vested interest in preventing Dr. Fagen from being hired, by anyone. They want her to be unemployable. Why?Well, turns out unionists HATE her with a passion: http://townhall.com/columnists/joyoverbeck/2015/10/23/union-lies-may-squash-successful-colorado-education-reforms-n2069863When someone dares rock the boat, those that scream the loudest are the ones whose bank accounts will be affected. It seems that this woman rocked the boat and now the union lefties are out for blood-- and yet, the American public has been pleading for education reform for as long as I can remember. Reform, yes -- just don't you dare touch the unions!!! 4951

@buffaloglenn:

In her Colorado contract she had monetary stipulations if she was let go, which was full payment of the rest of her contract. She signed a six year contract at 260k or 280k a year (I don't remember).

So I would guess that she wouldn't come here without similar clauses in her contract. If she stinks, she'll be let go but not without walking away with 1.5 million of our tax payer money. Is that worth it to you? 4951
