You work the various sites and be flexible on dates and times of departure. No magic bullet. 4951

@cindysthpw, also look at flying into different airports.  When we go to some places we fly into a different state, rent a car and drive in.   I know going into some places is just a couple hour drive.  We do this all the time when we go into WY.  It is way cheaper to fly into Denver.  Works out great for us, because we hit up a couple of outlets in CO and get great deals on summer and winter clothes for the kids, depending on when we goEmoticonGotta give yourself plenty of time too, if you look to fly next week you will pay premium prices.  I look on the airlines website usually.  Find the flight I want, and as a general rule, I only want direct flights, and I never fly really early in the am.  So I tend to pay more for a ticket.  But if someone has to take me to the airport, a 6am flight is awful.

@Fallon:

Early is a drag but the flights are cheaper and usually on time. Later in the day you are more likely to be delayed or even cancelled as the schedule goes to hell. 4951

I love the early AM flights if I'm going somewhere to goof off. It doesn't feel like most of the day has been wasted, especially flying back time zones.

Book well in advance, not be picky about layovers and keep luggage minimal. I fly United direct everywhere and try to be in a good size plane. 4951

Also fly in and out mid week- not on Mon or Fri I saved 200.00 on my upcoming trip to GER by leaving on Wed and coming back on Mon.Fly "off" times of the year where you are going . In general summers and holidays are more expensive.Early AM flights.In general I've found United to be more pricey than other airlines. This year's trips to GER and CO were cheaper by 100's by going with Lufthansa and Southwest. It's a pain to go all the way to Hobby BUT I saved almost 200.00 by flying SWA.Shop all the airlines-  4951

My method is as follows, consistent with other posters:1. Go to kayak.com, find a ticket to your liking.2. Go directly to the airline website to make reservation3. Be flexible and travel middle of the week, optimally between 5-9 days.4. Look for tix at least 3-4 weeks out but not more than 6. Beyond 6, airlines have "fixed" prices that they haven't begun playing with yet.5. If you are doing FF miles, book well in advance with no upper end timeframe. United FF tix, for instance,  never get cheaper than 10,000 mi/one way.6. No one airline is always cheaper, because it depends on destination. United (IAH) and SW (HOB) are Hubs in Houston and will usually be direct and SW has the advantage of not charging $200 for ticket change, but you have to deal with Hobby. AA will usually run you thru Dallas, Delta thru Atlanta. 4951
