Seems nice to split out of here in the morning, we have to leave KW at about 6am. Bags are packed, enough clothes, some sunscreen and camera gear. Threw in a couple of big beach towels, some plastic containers and lids and a few of my travel knives for what we might have in our room to eat or out on the beach or a picnic. I like to pack a few dry food items. I love nuts so I always pack a few baggies of walnuts and other ones. Crazy but that is me. We decided to leave St. Augustine on Friday.... too hard for my DW to separate business expenses from personal and to switch the hotel bill for the room to certificates or points for our vacation time and not deal with figuring out what the client will be billed for. We decided to check out of the hotel in St. Augustine, return the rental car in Orlando, then rent a new car using points for next weekend and drive to Clearwater and use points for a Marriott on Sand Key there. So our car for next weekend and the hotel will be no cost. I love meeting up with my DW in distant places for romantic get aways! 4951

In Clearwater Beach ( right across the little bridge from the Marriott headed North) there are some great restaurants. Here are some of my FavesPost Corner Pizza- on Gulfview on the right- maybe 1-2 miles from your hotel) Family owned forever- best pizza I have ever had. I have never made it past the pizza but I see people eating all kinds of dishes- lots of Greek items. Place gets packed to go early Frenchys Rockaway Grill- directly on the beach on Mandalay Ave-on the North side of the island- you have to go through the roundabout. It's on the left- past the Hilton and The Sand Pearl. Lots of seafood/ burgers ect. Food is ok to good but the views are great!!A little bar across from the Hilton-good selection of beers and the food was great!! Don't remember the name- it was new to me last time we were thereBreakfast place on the same side of the street as the bar- maybe even next door? A hole in the wall that's been there forever- good food- the locals go thereHave fun- if you have time drive North a bit- into Dunnedin- go see the sponge docks and hit Honeymoon Island State Park- very pristine island- there's also a ferry to Caldesi Stae Park- haven't been there but supposed to be good shelling 4951

@Jpgurl: When traveling, I love going exclusively to local places. The rule is "go nowhere that you can get in Houston" which rules out almost all chains, etc. Every city or town has local favorites and hidden gems. 4951

Oh man we go to clearwater/st Pete beach every other year and LOVE it there! We always stay at the beachcomber because it's right on the beach and has 2 pools and a great beach bar!! We will be talking the inlays into going next summer when they come down to visit in a few days! 4951

I used to live in tampa, and frenchys was one of my favorites, The grouper cheeks are superb.
The original location is much better, but better then the beach location.
I recommend the grouper cheeks and sandwich

There are some great places in Ybor City as well.  If you like Greek, Acropolis Greek Taverna.  I can't get enough of this place, and it fit the budget nicely when travelling for work.  Columbia Cuban restaurant is a must try as well, I think there's one in Clearwater, but I have only eaten at the one in Ybor City....many times I might add.For a splurge, check out Bern's Steakhouse. One of the best steakhouses in the country I hear.  It's a little pricey, but not outrageously so, unless you do the dessert room that is. 4951

@donnatella: I agree.  When I was travelling I had the local people I was working with to send me in the right direction for unique places.  TvFoodmaps.com never set me wrong either.

totally agree with @ForeCPA90 born and raised in Tampa, still have family there.  Acropolis is really good, I go to Carmines instead of Columbia, they have great devil crabs.  There is also a great place on the beach near my sisters place called Lulu's Oyster Bar on Indian Rocks Beach.  Very good and casual. 4951
