I am considering purchasing a generator to install for my home.  I have a feeling this hurricane season will be an active one.  I was without power for 13 days during Ike.  1.  Who has had a generator installed for their home?2.  Who would your recommend?3.  What was the approximate cost?4.  What brand did you purchase?5.  Was it worth it overall? pros/cons? 4951

Lot of it depends on what you want to power. More demand = more money. You just want to keep the fridges alive and a couple lights get a small portable unit $4-1000. You want AC it ratchets up from there. Best bet is to figure out what you want to cover and get a couple quotes. 4951

Generac 20 KW, runs off natural gas, automatic start and stop, test runs once a week, can run the entire house as long as we don't use ALL major appliances at the same time.  An electric oven and stove are very heavy electricity users.  Uses an air cooled motorcycle 999cc engine.  Installed cost was ridiculous at $12K but we're very happy with it.edited:  Emoticonrices are higher before and during hurricane season.  Winter purchases might save you a few grand. 4951

@BooBear: ROFL. Apparently, a whole herd of those Persian kittens wandered off.

Well, I found a tabby kitten yesterday.  Does that count?  I could try and find some sort of a wig to wrap around it to pass it off as a Persian! 4951

Generac is top of the line. If I had the money and just had to have a home generator that's what I would get.

Our Generac 1800 kW cost us around $6000 total. We ordered it from Amazon; had a small slab poured for it, paid a contractor to hook it up to gas line, city inspection, box installed.   4951
