Has anyone ever purchased a car from a car rental agency?  i.e Enterprise, National, AVIS, etc...?What was your experience good or bad? 4951

Why would you want to purchase a car that people have completely beat the crap out of it while they had it rented?! Mentality of rentals - hey I purchased the full insurance so let's see what this car can do! No way in hell I'd purchase! 4951

Just asking because I have had friends purchase a car they rented and it turned out to be a great car.  I also get the "it's ain't my car, so tear it up" mentality.  More so just wondering what the opinions/experiences have been. 4951

I would not.  If I rented a car, and liked it enough to want to purchase, I would go grab a new one.  If it is already a year old, then I would look at the dealer's certified pre-owned or maybe CarMax.  I would NEVER purchase prior rentals, even when the credit unions get rid of fleets, repos, etc.  4951

I bought my suburban just over 5 years ago, it was an former enterprise rental vehicle. It was one year old with 25K miles and I have only had it in the shop twice since owning it. Once it had something weird with the fuel tank and most recently for some usual wear and tear repairs but nothing out of the normal for a car that now has 112K miles on it. I've heard that the rental places take really good car of their cars because they don't want them breaking down in the middle of a rental period. I would do it again. 4951

Years ago, I did.  I didn't buy it directly from the rental agency, I think it had gone through the used car auction process so I got it from a dealer, but we did the research and found that it had previously been a rental with Avis, I think.  I bought it anyway.  And it was a great car -- no regrets.  True, drivers aren't exactly careful when they drive a rental.  But the rental COMPANIES are very diligent about maintenance and upkeep of their vehicles.  I actually feel better about that purchase than any of the used cars I bought blind over the years.  If I were buying another used car - I'd do it again. 4951

What type of car because if it's a little compact car, it would only do so much. I don't think it's possible to try and destroy them if you rent one. Anything else, I would think twice. 4951

@Bubble89:
I actually drive more granny style when it is one I have to return. Even if insured is a mark against me! 4951

Just shopping around for a Camry, more shopping doing a little research.  I was intrigued about the rental car sales, I didn't really think of that as an option.  It seems like they also sell the cars they do not want to the local car dealerships and keep the best cars to sell to the general public. 4951

My car was a rental. Bought it 9 years ago, have 160k miles on it, no major problems, and running great. It's a Camry. I bought it at Carmax. 4951

They normally sell them with about 30K miles. That is the sweet spot for max profit. Standard models, no frills, no extras but inspected so you kinda know the car is in good shape. Not a bad choice.    4951

@donnatella: I think it means, that you have little regard for the consequences on the rental car. So, you'd drive through anything with it. Off road, through lava, etc.  but not the precious SUV Emoticon
