So we are getting ready to power wash our fence for the first time and wanted to know if anyone has any tips or insight. So far I know I should just use water and no bleach since it damages the wood.

Any other tips would be appreciated .

Thank you! 4951

Power washing is not the best thing for wood. No real good way to clean it though. A diluted bleach spray works well. Let it sit, rinse with a garden hose. Power wash will get it clean but also harms the wood. If you go with the PW go light. Clean up tough spot with diluted  bleach. If you stain the fence, the darker the stain the longer it stays looking nice. 4951

When I did it years ago, 1 it does improve the apperance, 2 it does cause damage (well the damage is already there, but it makes it worse). On an old fence. 4951

Don't do it- the high pressure from the water tears up the fence 4951

I bought that stuff that attaches to a hose to spray on the house to remove mold and mildew.  I had a bunch left over so I used it on the fence. It worked well on the house and the fence. 4951

Totally do it! If your fence desinigrates, you need to replace it.  4951

I pressure washed this fence when I first moved here. 12 years old fence....made it look so good. Yes, there some horrible boards....but I knew we'd be replacing soon. Night and day difference... Do it!  4951

@Maisey1: that's how my DH did our driveway, house & fence.

Wood fences are supposed to be gray. Cedar do not power wash. Cedar contains an oil that protects the wood, power washing removes that oil. If you must power wash, a sealer, stain or paint is recommended. Emoticonressure treated, it really won't be that destructive, but sealer is still recommended.Dan the Handyman 4951

The dirt and mold appear to be the only things holding up my fence. 4951

I power wash my fence and I did my deck, when I had one.  I had a nozzle attachment that was specifically made for wood.  It sure looked nice after it was done.  I do not like Cedar fences because they turn and ugly gray.  I like the natural brown look. 4951
