Does anyone know of a honest electrician I can use to put a light fixture up? Not just black, white wires involved, but a red one also in the mix???  4951

Red wires don't require any special level of training. Usually it means a hot wire and in a ceiling fixture if it is with a black and a white it usually means it is controlled by a separate switch from the black one. Then again I've seen some odd home wiring jobs so be careful.  4951

Veterans Electric good, used them couple of time. I'd look at some youtube videos, sounds like a simple job. 4951

One wire may not be needed...had this issue when I installed a fan. All I needed was a hot and ground since the fan had no light like the old fan  so I capped that one. Go watch some videos and save some coin. 4951

I asked michael..he said to check wires because color isn't always done correctly but..

My question:
Light fixture: 2 white wires tied together, 2 black wires tied together and 1 red wire...what is the red wire for? The black and white?

His response:

White neutral. Black hot. Red probably hot also known as a traveler. Must be a three way switch or more than one light switch controls light

He is not an electrician but has never burnt our house down. I then confused him with my followup questions. 4951
