Generally St. Augustine is the most common grass in our area unless you had your lawn completely done with a more expensive grass. The Ag experts usually say any blend that is a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 (Nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) is best as St. Augustine needs a good big of nitrogen. Keep in mind the blend might be expressed as 15-5-10 for a 3-1-2, etc. You can usually find these types of non name brand fertilizers at the back of the garden dept at the big box stores. Just look for the formulation. Also, we get a host of pests like cinch bugs and grubs that can destroy the grass so an insecticide such as Dursban is often good in the spring.  And if weeds are a problem there are good general herbicides. Sometimes you can come out cheaper just getting the individual things instead of the blended name brand that is supposed to do everything. Make sure you know how much to set your spreader at so you don't over do it.  4951

@rockets22: Well, I wonder if it isn't more of the application. Some spreaders are specific to the brand of fertilizer if they make both the spreader and the mix. Setting one spreader to 5 might not apply the same on another brand spreader with a similar number system.

Check the organic fertilizers at Ace, in the ratios that Chris mentioned. 4951

@rockets22: I've used Scott's in the past, and it hasn't killed my lawn.  It is more expensive than the generic and is usually not in the 3-1-2 ratio that most folks around here recommend.  So now I go cheap and get the kind that @chrisinkingwood suggested in his earlier post.

Speedy Green at Lowe's works fine at 2/3 the cost of Scott's. Occasionally it'll be 20% off (like in March). Some will argue a healthy, fertilized St. Augustine is zealous enough to choke out competing weeds once things get in the 90's like next week. Many of the synthetic (non-organic) pre and post emergent weedkillers will also damage tree and shrub root systems. If you go the weedkiller route, get it on now or soon, before things start baking. 4951

This is last year for Scott's weed and feed.
I used it last year and this and put it down as instructed. My yard is now nearly 80% weeds.
Last year by August 1, the weeds were dead and the yard was bare/brown.
I'm thinking sod...Killing everything under it first.
Don't like weeds on the farm and definitely don't like them in the yard. 4951

My dad had a beautiful yard. He used 13 13 13 or triple 13 and used a spray attached to the water hose for weeds. I wish I could remember what spray. 4951

Swear by Southern Lawn Weed and Feed. I've paid twice up for the local mixes and they don't work as well on my lawn. No complaints (Scotts) 4951
