Does anyone know what the time frame needs to be for the inspection prior to registration with new Texas 2 step thing? Our registration on the old '96 Toyota expires at the end of June but right now the check engine light is off and my OBDII code reader says I should pass the test.   If I drive more this week it might throw the check engine light and then I have to reset it and drive it again to get it back to being ready. Is a month from the registration month ok for an inspection? 4951

You better go... They say you need to allow 90 days for the inspection information update in the database so the it shows as complete when you go to renew you license sticker.  Mine expires in June, I went a couple of weeks ago.. 4951

You just can't get it inspected any sooner than 90 days out, so you should be fine to get it now. 4951

@Andreweggplant: It's updated immediately. I inspected mine at the place by Krogers in Atascocita and drove home (15/20 minutes) and renewed my registration online.

I wonder who thought, "since the current system works and is easy to understand, lets create a mind-boggling, confusing system for no reason at all."Texas should get rid of inspections like most states have done (or never did). Cars that will pass, pass. Cars that will not pass, will still be driven, not passed. 4951

Someone may have already said it, but as long as you have had your car inspected within 90 days (inside of 90) of getting your new registration you are fine.  So getting it inspected now will allow you to renew the registration between now and the end of June.  In my case, the online system recognized I had the inspection done within a day (I inspected one day, renewed registration the next day).  4951

@Chrisinkingwood: Be careful though.  If you have not driven enough miles since the computer was last reset, I am assuming you unhooked the battery, they will not inspect it until you have driven 40 or 50 miles or so.  When they hook it up, the computer will tell them it was reset recently.
