With all the other med questions being posted, I'd like to ask if anyone on here has any experience or knowledge of the filters they put in your veins/arteries to catch blood clots.
I had heart bypass surgery 17 years ago and nearly died from blood clots. In a final effort to save me, the surgeon gave in to his nurse and agreed to install filters in my veins/arteries (7 of them). These filters were an "umbrella" type that were inserted through my groin.
I have more recently been advised that these filters have been causes of blood vessel ruptures and people bleeding to death internally (it's even been on TV).
My problem is two fold.
1. I can't find a doctor willing to discuss the potential problem (my heart doctor at the time has retired and the surgeon was fired from two hospitals shortly after my surgery).
2. I went to the hospital where the surgery was performed and the filters were installed and they don't keep records past 10 years. Therefore, they can't provide any info on the type of filters are where they are located.

I'm not one to panic but I've had more than 10 heart attacks and my reported heart efficiency is less than 23%. Since my bout with pneumonia in March, my BP has increased and my shortness of breath is worse.
Any info, link to info or a recommended doctor will be greatly appreciated. 4951

Do you have a current cardiologist? I would think they would be able to give you professional advice and up to date information. My MiL sees Dr. Ricky Ganim in the KW hospital complex. I do know that my DW first husband had a few of those filters from some blood clots he had before they diagnosed his cancer and they kept him from ever having an MRI at the time. Not sure if MRI technology is different now. 4951

My Mom had a filter put in about 10 years ago.  She is now 91 with and has undergone several more surgeries.  Each time the Surgeons are relieved that the filter is there because my Mom clots very easily. The last cardiologist I asked about these failing said not to worry about it.  I guess the percentage is miniscule. The risk outweighs the alternative. 4951

@Safety44, how is your son?  I have both of you in my prayers.  He is truly blessed to have you there with him.

@Fallon: He's holding his own temporarily. I went to a lawyer with him today and will go to court with him tomorrow.
Fortunately I have a number of houses that I can move them into, but they are not in the same school district.
This is actually a stepson but we don't think of it like that.
His bio father committed suicide when the son was nine so I watch him pretty close.
Thanks for asking and I'll gladly accept your prayers and thoughts for him.
My grandsons don't know they're moving yet. That's going to be tough.
Divorces are a bitxh on the kids, even good divorces, if there is such a thing. I think the older the kids, the harder it is.

rick ganim would be one of the right people to see for this problem in the KW area imo.  they have a vascular surgeon in their group that could potentially help you.  The other option would be to see dr. loyalka in the medical center at hermann at the texas medical center and one of the vascular surgeons in his group. good luck.  4951

This is what my DH had to say "They are called birds nest filters and they save lives everyday.  Do some people have issues? Yes, but there is risk with everything including Tylenol, but you weigh the good with the bad.  In this man's case it has been a life saver.  Without the birds nest filter those clots could have killed this man." 4951

I use Dr Marcy Lim with Cardiovascular Assoc as my regular cardio.  Dr Charlie Gnanim is the vascular surgeon with them who has done stents in both groin areas on 3 different occasions due to me having melted arteries in my abdomen from extensive radiation and chemo.  He is doing vein surgery on both lower legs the end of the month (in office procedure) due to blocked veins not pumping the blood up.  He is the only doctor in Houston that would take me for the stents and I feel very blessed to have found him.  You would not be sorry for at least a consultation with him.  With your shortness of breath and hypertension, you really need to see a cardio ASAP.  It's a very good group and not hard to get an appointment with fairly soon. 4951

@safety44 if you have a house relatively close (or not really) the boys can stay in their school until at least the end of the year. McKinney Vento is a federal law, so it should help them out. 4951

@Safety44: Awhile back, maybe February or March, I had a conversation with a stranger in the parking lot of Walmart who had suddenly started coughing in the store and he told me that he had once had a bad episode in which he had many clots all over his body and nearly died of it.  I told him he should immediately get to the doctor because sudden coughing and short of breath can be a pulmonary embolism and my healthy 42 year old brother in law had just dropped dead of that in January of this year.  I wonder if you were that guy. Do you remember talking to some random woman at the little neighborhood Walmart store on Northpark?

@turkeytrax: Strangely enough, I do recall a woman talking to me at Walmart as I was having trouble. I went into Mermorial Herman the next day with pneumonia and similar heart related issues as I'm having today,
Your warnings were part of the reason i discussed my problem with Nurse3 and Ithen went into Memorial Herman.
Thanks.
