Go open your meter when you know no one is running water. See if the meter runs.

Put drops of food color in your toilet tank. See if any of the color winds up in the bowl shortly after.

Check your timing on the sprinklers. 4951

If that shows nothing one other check is to see if they have been estimating your bill for a while. When that happens they catch you up all at once. 4951

COH is notorious for averaging. We use 6-8k gallons then will get a bill for 11K gallons all of the sudden, takes 3-4 calls to get them to come out and check meter, and its been accurate every time. used the food coloring trick, also no leaks, just all the sudden a bill will reflect a 40% increase in water for no reason. FYI mine has been about 78-90 for about 4-5 months now. Put it this way, it has been the exact amount as the month before on 3 seperate occasions, what are the chances of that. 0, they average. 4951

I hate COH when it comes to water, they really hose the customers.Fighting them about water bills makes water boarding look like a fun alternative!  4951

With no lawn watering/pool, or toilet/faucet leaks, normal 7-10 minute showers. and 2-3 loads of laundry per week, you should use 1000-2000 gallons per person per month, as a rule of thumb. Also, go on the website, the more you use the more you pay and it isn't linear. You pay more per gallon as you cross various useage thresholds. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood: It's one more reason the COH wanted to annex Kingwood.  They picked up the property taxes as well as high water fees with its own system already in place, and they use the excess they make in Kingwood to subsidize the city proper.

Those of you with a Residential and Lawn account need to check out the new COH website for the water department (where you pay your bills on-line).I only see my residential bill and not my lawn bill.  I've sat here for 30+ minutes trying to do a Live Chat to see how to fix this.  ALSO, several functions on the new website do not work and just give you an ERROR message.OK, UPDATE:  I finally got a rep on the Live Chat.  With the new website, they are also combining your residential and lawn irrigation bills into one.  That would also explain why my residential bill went from $30 to a little over $100.@richard2003:  This may explain your latest bill. 4951

ALL STOP:  The email notice that I got for my bill says my bill is $57.28.  When I log in, it says I owe $131.57.  However, if you look at the bill online (pdf format), it only shows the $57.28.  I'm back waiting for Live Chat.  If they are going to combine the bills, then the single bill should account for both residential and lawn!I got a different person on Live Chat this time and she said that they are having quite a few problems with the new website and are working on them.Fortunately, my bill is not due until mid-month.  Their "old" website sucked ba!!s and there new one doesn't seem any better.

@Retired_Engineer, the COH H2O dept are bat rastards.  2 months ago my bill said I had used 20 Thousand Gallons.  WTH???  I paid it but demanded a full accounting from them.  I had Trent Severn come out 4 times.  I basically called 311 every weekEmoticon  I am going to make those a@@hats pay for that as much as I had to.We have no leaks.  All new toilets, faucets and shower heads.  And we had a plumber come out.  And at that time I had not used my sprinkler system since October.   They are straight up thieves.  How in the heck can any one house, with NO pool use that much water in a month?  Oh the month was Feb.  So they are saying I used 20K gallons in the shortest month of the year?  I call them weekly still.  I hate that Dept.  They should fired everyone in that Dept and start over.  I have yet to find one that isn't a moron.

@Fallon:  I agree and also hate that dept.  Their attitude is that we have to use them so suck it!  I pay all my bills online and theirs is the one that I continue to have the most problems with.  I haven't used my sprinkler system at all in the last 30 days, but the bill is actually for the previous billing period when I did use the sprinklers in between rains. That's why I use the Live Chat.  If I was actually talking to someone there, I might get irritated and say some nasty things.  By writing a response, I can take a few deep breaths before I type.

I was on their new website yesterday, I had to reset our password to access our account.  We had a leak fixed last month and I wanted to check current usage to history, but it looks like all the history is gone. It does seem that they average bill frequently.  We will have the exact same bill for several months, even when I know usage is different.  4951

Hey, take it is easy on the COH Water Dep't. You are dealing with mentally handicapped people here. The combined IQ of the department is your 131 bill! 4951

Does it have anything to do with you running the water for ten minutes every time you need to clean the lines of brown water?  Should we be charging the water company for doing their job???? 4951
